🥦 Fuelling Future Champions: Nutrition Workshop with Nick McPhate 🍎💪
As part of our commitment to providing a holistic approach to athletic development, the 7-9 Sports Academy has invited renowned sports dietitian and alumni, Nick McPhate, to conduct a specialised nutrition workshop tailored specifically for adolescent athletes. The workshop focused on the crucial role nutrition plays in performance and recovery, helping our students make informed choices for their athletic journey.
🌱 About Nick McPhate - Instagram @snldietetics
Nick McPhate is an esteemed sports dietitian with a wealth of experience working with adolescent athletes. He has been recognised as an expert in the field, particularly in nutrition performance and nutrition for recovery. Nick has also collaborated with Melbourne United, a leading professional basketball team in the NBL (National Basketball League), further solidifying his expertise in sports nutrition.
🍽️ Nutrition for Performance and Recovery
During the excursion, our students had the incredible opportunity to engage in a 30-45 minute presentation led by Nick McPhate himself. Through this interactive session, Nick delved into the critical role of nutrition in enhancing athletic performance and promoting efficient recovery. Students put their newly acquired knowledge into practice by creating their own recovery drink. Under Nick McPhate's guidance, they learnt about the essential components of a recovery beverage and had the opportunity to experiment with different ingredients to design a personalised drink that meets their specific needs.
A big thank you to Nick for an incredible experience!
‘The Sandringham College Basketball Academy headed to MSAC earlier in the term to compete in their first tournament for the year. This event is always one of the highlights of the program with Sandy coming up against schools from across Victoria including Albert Park, Richmond and Elwood. Academy athletes were given the opportunity to implement the learnings from their weekly training in a competitive environment and did so with pride, teamwork and hard work. A special shoutout goes to Yvan Johnston who was awarded his academy captaincy at the event and Seb Morrow who represented Sandy in the shooting championship’ - Ellen Perry, Director of Operations Chase Basketball.
Year 9 Outdoor Education classes went on camp to Wilson's Prom from the 26th to the 28th of April. This immersive excursion provided our students with a unique opportunity to deepen their experiential knowledge of outdoor environments while enriching their theoretical understanding.
🌿 Preparing for Adventure
In the months leading up to the camp, our students dedicated themselves to comprehensive preparations. They learned essential skills such as cooking on a Trangia stove, setting up tents, and first aid techniques. They also familiarised themselves with the principles of responsible behaviour in different outdoor environments. This groundwork ensured that our students were well-equipped and confident as they embarked on their three-day adventure.
🚶♂️ Exploring Nature's Wonders
During the camp, our students had the privilege of immersing themselves in the awe-inspiring landscapes of Wilson's Promontory National Park. They embarked on a picturesque hike from Koonwarra to Meeniyan reserve, where they had the chance to observe and appreciate the unique flora and fauna of the area. Additionally, they engaged in stand-up paddle boarding at Tidal River, caught some waves while surfing at Waratah Bay, and challenged themselves with a rewarding hike up the trail to Mount Oberon. These experiences allowed our students to connect with nature and develop a profound appreciation for the outdoor environment.
🌟 A Journey of Self-Sufficiency and Growth
We sincerely hope that all our students had an unforgettable time during this camp, filled with joy, learning, and personal triumphs. By honing their skills and becoming more self-sufficient in outdoor environments, they have laid the foundation for a future filled with exciting opportunities and continued growth. We encourage our students to pursue their passion for outdoor recreation studies, building upon the valuable experiences gained during this excursion.
This term, Unit 1/2 Health and Human Development students participated in a simulated baby exercise, which simulates the responsibilities and challenges of parenthood. During this exercise, students took on the role of a temporary parent, caring for an infant simulator. The simulator is a computerized baby that requires constant supervision which reflects the various needs of babies such as feeding, burping, rocking, and diaper changes.
This experience provide valuable insights into the realities of full-time childcare, teaching students important skills and fostering their understanding of the commitment required. Furthermore, it aims to develop their persistence and resilience by completing the simulation without quitting. We believe that this simulated baby experience will be an invaluable learning opportunity, enabling our students to develop essential life skills while gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges and joys of parenthood. A big thank you to parents and guardians for your ongoing support and cooperation in making this exercise a success.
