Performing Arts

WWRY Rehearsals have started!!!!

May / June is always a busy and exciting time at Sandringham College for the Performing Arts. Our different domain areas have their performance seasons with students acting and directing the VCE Theatre production, Dance Academy and VET Dance students putting on the always amazing Dance showcase, and the VCE performance night and Instrumental Music Ensemble night. If that wasn't enough, the production rehearsals for We Will Rock You have started on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons with the cast rocking out and going Gaga!

2023 Performance Calendar

A number of parents have contacted me asking for the performance calendar as it's dropped off the Compass Newsfeed. Please find it below and also on the school's website.

COLLEGE PRODUCTION UPDATE

The cast of the 2023 Sandringham College Production of Queen and Ben Elton’s production of We Will Rock You are singing and dancing up a storm at their weekly rehearsals and they are sounding sensational! It’s not an exaggeration to say that ‘We are the Champions’ and indeed that ‘We will Rock You’ so much that you will go ‘Radio ga ga’!!

Rehearsals are going so well that no one will be ‘Under Pressure’ as long as the ‘Killer Queen’ doesn’t interfere with ‘That Crazy Little Thing Called Love’.

We know that ‘These are the Days of our Lives’ and the next two weeks will be interesting as ‘A Kind Of Magic’ is sure to happen!  Some performers are keen to get on to ‘I want it all’ but we all need ‘Somebody to Love’ before ‘Another One Bites the Dust’. Meanwhile the band are making beautiful music and the ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ will not be a problem for them.

DATES: September 1- 9 You won’t want to miss it!

StringFest

For the first time in many years students from Sandringham College attended the South-Eastern Victorian Region 2023 StringFest which was held at Brighton Secondary College on Tuesday the 30th of May.  Five students from the Sandringham College String Ensemble became part of a much larger group comprising of over 100 students from eight other State secondary colleges. The students rehearsed for much of the day to prepare three pieces for recording in the afternoon and had the opportunity to socialise with students from other schools. Congratulations to Mimi Battin, Lani Cunningham, June Kemp, Dottie Patterson and Arthur Toovey for their work during the day.

Also a Big Thank you to Jeremy De Korte the Director of the String Ensemble for organising and inspiring the students!

VCE Music Unit 3 Contemporary Performance Night

Remix - Instrumental Music Ensemble Night

A Wonderful night of music from every Instrumental Music ensemble in the program. Over 100 students performed on the night in 8 ensembles. Once again the students performed exceptionally well with standout performances from Choir, Jazz Band and the Beginner Band. Well done to all students involved and thank you to the audience for coming along and being very supportive.

VCE Theatre Production success!

Congratulations to the VCE Theatre Studies Unit 1 & 3 students who presented their unique gothic interpretation of Angela Betzien's Australian play, 'Where in the world is Frank Sparrow?' VCAA trained assessors were in the audience both nights, along with family, friends and members of our incredibly supportive community. All agreed that the students had worked exceptionally hard, produced an interesting and imaginative performance piece and showcased a range of skills and knowledge.

We were particularly impressed with the ways in which they collaborated in those final weeks to bring the show together, supporting one another with kindness and respect and incorporating feedback to refine their creative choices. This represents a large percentage of the Unit 3 coursework so students should be very proud of their achievements. Special thanks to Kylie Maltarollo and Amy Porter (2) for capturing evidence of their fantastic work, seen below.

2023 Mid-Year Dance Showcase

Congratulations to the Dance Academy and VET VCE Dance students on a fantastic Mid-Year Showcase.

The season featured dance works in many styles including contemporary, lyrical, jazz, street and tap. We thank all the teachers and choreographers who have worked with the students to put these pieces together. We especially congratulate the year 12 dancers who created an elegant student-choreographed piece as well as performed in other routines for the second last time here at Sandringham.

It was excellent to see so many friends and families attend the performances to celebrate and enjoy the semester’s work, we thank you for attending and supporting the Performing Arts.

We are now looking ahead to the end-of-year showcase season set for the 24th and 26th  of November. We look forward to seeing you then.
