Djeembana Program

Salvation Army Your Homelessness City Tour

On Tuesday 23rd May, the Year 9 Djeembana Program went on a city excursion to participate in the Salvation Army Youth Homeless City Tour.  The tour and workshop, were designed to challenge preconceptions and inspire empathy, fostering a deeper understanding of homelessness in Australia while providing a platform for understanding social issues in our community.

Operated both indoors and outdoors, the workshop took place within the Salvation Army's historic 69 Bourke Street building, creating a unique environment for learning. Inside, we delved into the reasons why individuals experience homelessness, unraveling the complexities of this issue. By exploring personal stories and the underlying causes, students could understand the challenges faced by those who are homeless and encourage compassion and understanding.

The outdoor tour component of the program took us along the city's footpaths, where we visited sites of refuge and listen to lived experiences. This immersive approach allowed students to witness first hand the impact of homelessness on individuals and communities.

Through engaging activities, we challenged stereotypes and encouraged critical thinking, empowering students to become advocates for social change.
