Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change)

Ms D'AMBROSIO (Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change) — I had the pleasure of

dropping by the Lakes South Morang P–9 School last week to say hello to the South Morang Scout

Group. The South Morang scouts are going from strength to strength and now have a great new

partnership with the Lakes South Morang P–9 School, which will be their new base.

The South Morang Scout Group provides an adventurous and fun program for young people in my electorate of Mill Park. Joey scouts are learning the value of community engagement and leadership, with an emphasis on learning by doing and teamwork. It was an excellent visit, and I want to thank theSouth Morang scouts for the presentation to me of the Scouts Victoria ambassador scarf by their youth ambassador, Michael.

A special thanks also to principal Kerrie Heenan for welcoming me to the school assembly on Crazy Hair Day. Kerrie was also presented with her own South Morang Scout Group scarf, making her an honorary member of the group. I want to join the South Morang Scout Group in thanking Kerrie for making all the scouts so welcome at her school and facilitating the full program for local kids. The school recently celebrated their 10th anniversary, and they provide a wonderful, enriching education to our youngest citizens.

I am very proud to represent Melbourne's north and to be part of an Andrews Labor government that is building a better future for all Victorians. This is a great partnership, one that I recommend highly to all schools in terms of providing new programs in their curriculum, integrating fantastic opportunities for young people to get out and about and learn new skills and cooperate. Congratulations to all concerned.

Year 9 Transition Week

Next week our Year 9 students experience their Transition Week, organised to expose them to a variety of senior-secondary campuses, post-secondary institutions, and careers options and pathways. The 2017 Year 9 Transition Week program is as follows:

Monday 29th May:

Year 9 students spend the day at school where they will select a part-time job they wish to apply for and write an application and a suitable resume. These will then be taken to Plenty Ranges Convention Centre next term for students to participate in practice interviews for these positions, in preparation for applying for part-time employment.

Tuesday 30th May:

Students spend the day attending a variety of information sessions from guest speakers regarding many occupations, and will also hear from former Lakes students and Lakes staff as they share their career pathways stories.

Wednesday 31 May:

Students attend an all-day excursion to Peter Lalor Vocational College & ONTTC (Outer Northern Trade Training Centre), NCAT (Northern College of the Arts & Technology) or The University of Melbourne. All these excursions leave from South Morang Station at 8.45am.

Thursday 1st June:

All Year 9 students visit RMIT Bundoora Campus and Melbourne Polytechnic Epping Campus for a talk and tour to gain an understanding of what is offered at each institution. This excursion leaves from school.

Friday 2nd June:

All Year 9 students attend La Trobe University. This excursion leaves from school.

School Fundraising Committee

School Council is seeking expressions of interest from our school community to form a School Fundraising Committee. The purpose of this committee will be:

to identify one or two specific items/goals to fundraise for that will benefit the entire school;
to decide how this fundraising will occur;
to then organise and see these fundraising events to completion.

If you would like to contribute to our school and be a part of this, please contact me at our Middle Years Campus on 9401 3919. Fundraising Committee meeting times will be negotiated amongst committee members to suit and include everyone. It would be wonderful to see a mix of Early Years’ and Middle Years’ families involved.

Tech School Update

The Lakes is very excited to be involved in the development of the Whittlesea Tech School initiative which is set to launch in 2018. The Tech School will provide some fantastic opportunities for our students to be involved in exciting inquiry projects with a STEM focus (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths). The Tech School will have strong links with local industry partners and will provide opportunities for our students to create innovative solutions to real-world problems.

Affirmative Action

Today a group of Year 9 female leaders were privileged to be invited to Melbourne Polytechnic Preston Campus to hear from an absolutely inspirational speaker, Dr Denise Baken. This woman has led such an amazing life full of opportunities and met many challenges that she happily shared with us. Dr Denise Baken spoke of how she and her family have overcome racial segregation, her work as a Colonel in the American Armed Forces and how she worked in the Pentagon informing the Secretary of State.

Our girls represented our school fantastically and were the only Year 9 girls amongst year twelves and TAFE students.

The messages that resonated with our students were

Uniform

A whole school winter uniform check will occur next week. Please make sure track pants have the school logo. For further information on uniform, see page 16 & 17 of Student Diary.

Reminder: If you require assistance to get your child uniform please call Lucia who will gladly assist.

Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund

The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student misses out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government's commitment to breaking the link between a student's background and their achievements. CSEF will be provided to eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. T he annual CSEF amount per student is:

- $125 for primary school students

- $250 for secondary school students

How to Apply: Contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form or download from the CSEF website www.education.vic.gov.au/csef. If you have already completed this last year no need to complete again.
