Crossing the mid-line

Sinead and the OT students have been supporting students in crossing the midline. Let’s take a closer look.

What is crossing the midline?

Imagine an invisible line down the middle of our body from our head to our feet, that is the midline!

When we can cross our midline, one side of our body can reach the other side (from right to left, or vice versa).

Why is crossing midline important?

We are using both sides of our brain to coordinate the motor movements when we are crossing midline. It will train our brain to coordinate more complex and smooth movements for daily tasks, such as writing, tying shoelaces, and playing sports.

Crossing midline activities to try at home!

  • Playing Twister

  • Ask your child to wash your car

  • Playing bubble wand with big waves

  • Drawing on big surfaces

  • Ask your child to rub lotion/sunscreen in their upper arm

Encourage your child to cross the midline in these activities by reaching to the opposite side.
