Our Pathways students learned that plants can be grown in different ways. They used the Japanese Kokedama method. Kokedama means moss ball. Students watched a Bunnings video to learn how to make them. Students wore a mask and gloves to work with potting mix. They placed two lengths of twine in a bowl and used wet sphagnum moss to shape it tightly to the shape of the bowl. They removed their plant from the planter and teased the roots. Students sat the plant in a half stocking and repacked some of the soil around the plant. Next they sat the plant in the middle of the bowl. They tied a few pieces of string together and carefully lifted the ball shape out of the bowl. Students used their hands to press the ball into shape then used twine to wrap around the ball securely.

We planted a succulent called “Jellybeans” that has leaves that vary in shape and colour. Students will learn that if the plant feels heavy it has enough water and if the plant feels light it needs water. They will water the plant by sitting it in water. Amazing patience and skill from everyone in the group.
