Anzac Day

Students from both Room 11 and Room 5 made paper wreaths in memory of the ANZACS. These wreaths were placed at the Queens Park Cenotaph on Tuesday afternoon. JSC reps Eva and Harper from Room 5 and Daemon and Harshraj are pictured with the wreaths.

Reminder - Information Night

To our families and friends of MPW,

You are invited to attend an Information night on Wednesday 2nd of May in the Performance space at 7.00pm through to 8.30pm.

We are very happy to announce that David Hornsby will be presenting and  speaking about the teaching of English and the importance of a balanced approach.

Some of the things he will talk about include:

  • What do we actually do when we’re reading?  How does the reading process work?
  • How can we help our children with reading at home?
  • Why is phonics always a ‘hot topic’?
  • What is phonics, and what place does it have in a literacy program?
  • How does our spelling system work?  (It’s not all about sound.)

This is David’s 51st year in education. He is passionate about teaching and learning and doesn’t want to retire!

David was with the Victorian Ministry of Education for 28 years and taught at every year level from Prep to Year 6. During that time, he also lectured at La Trobe University, the University of Melbourne and RMIT University. For 4 years, he was an Education Department consultant in both primary and secondary schools and then returned to the primary classroom. He was the principal of Ringwood Heights Primary School, a school he loved, for 5 years.

He is currently in demand as an education consultant in schools and in conference centres across Australia and in many parts of the world. He has completed many lecture tours of the USA and the UK, and has also worked with teachers in China, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malta, New Zealand and Singapore.

Free Activity Day for Grade 5/6

Wednesday, 23rd May, 2018

F.A.D. is coming up! This is one of our favourite days of the school year – a day where our older students select from a range of great activities and create themselves a timetable of a fantastic day of learning and fun. Students, teachers, parents, uncles, aunties, grandparents and friends are invited to plan and run an activity for small groups of students to do on the day. All that’s required is some enthusiasm and a willingness to have a go (as well as a current working with children certificate, if you are an adult)!

Here are just some ideas for activities from previous successful F.A.D.s: football/ hockey/ cricket clinics, cooking, tie-dyeing, drama games, trivia, drawing, karaoke, dance, organ dissection, soccer match/skills games, table tennis tournament, calligraphy, woodwork, crafts, card making, sushi/ pizza/ pasta making, construction, basketball match/drills, puppetry, science experiments, aerobics, cartooning, jewellery making, fishing, learning a new board or card game, how to set up a tent, etc.

If you’re interested in running an activity on the day, please talk to a Grade 5/6 teacher, grab a form and return it to Fiona in Room 10 by Friday 4th May.

If you would like to find out more about F.A.D. before committing, or if you would like some help deciding on an activity, feel free to discuss this with one of the 5/6 teachers or other parents who have been involved in previous years.
