Building Confidence

GEKA Brady Road Kindergarten Education Team

At GEKA Brady Rd Kindergarten we encourage children to move out of their comfort zone. This may include climbing a tree and jumping onto a safety mat or sliding unassisted down a firefighter’s pole, riding a bike or even standing in front of their peers and talking about their weekend.

Children’s safety and wellbeing is our first priority. We provide encouragement, discussion, modelling and instruction to assist them with the skills and knowledge to take on these risky tasks.  We support and guide the children to attempt and “have a go” but allow them to make the choice in their own time.

Taking risks is beneficial to a child’s development. It helps to build children’s persistence and resilience. It also builds their confidence and teaches valuable life skills.  Children also learn to self-regulate – “how fast can I ride this bike and still stop quickly?”

Taking risks allows children to trust their own judgement in challenging situations and develops their sense of pride, accomplishment, and emotional resilience.  Educators and families should be aware of their own fears and try not to transfer these to the children and limit them from taking risks in their everyday experiences.
