School Council Meeting Report  28th February

Once again, we gathered on WebEx for our first School Council meeting for 2022. It began with the reading of this week’s horoscopes, while we waited for our school councillors to join the meeting for an official start. There may have also been some informal discussion around magpies, in particular their cunningness to work together to remove the tracking tags attached to them (as reported in the news segment the discussion was based on) as our councillors began to join the meeting.

Soon enough, the necessary amount of school councillors had arrived for the meeting to officially begin.

We commenced with the sharing of correspondence to School Council, with the notice of councillors who are unable to continue on School Council this year. The School Council thanked those members for their contributions to council.

Kerri shared her Principal’s Report, commenting on the current student numbers and staffing profile. There is a general trend in the network for movement to non-government schools and family’s relocation to regional areas. We welcome 3 new classroom teachers and PE teacher for the 2022 school year.

There was mention of the continuation of the school’s involvement in the DET Graduate/Mentor pilot. There has been great, supportive, discussion for the mentors to our teachers in their first years of teaching and ‘coaching at the elbow’. Which was pleasing to both hear and see in action.

Our camping program was outlined for 2022, with a change of date needed for the Year 3/4 camp. This will now be held in Term 2 in June. The 5/6 Camp will be in August and the Year 2 sleepover and F/1 activity night later in the year.

The school is working on developing the Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) and goals for 2022. This is based on current data sets and targets from the School Strategic Plan (SSP). The AIP will be shared at council and then to the community once completed.

Trend and growth data were shared to School Council regarding the progress towards the 2018-2022 SSP goals and data of student growth throughout the 2021 school year as a snapshot.  Moonee Ponds West PS continues to strengthen the academic social, and emotional wellbeing of its students after the two years of Remote Learning. As a school we continue to be achieving strongly in relation to our Network school.

Next was a report from the Resources Committee, with the exciting announcement for the recommendation that the Movie Night will go ahead as planned and will be held on the 8th April, as the first fundraising event for 2022.

Education Committee shared the update on the Dress Code Policy review. Actions for Term 1 and 2 based on community feedback in 2021 was to review the existing uniform items, review the Sunsmart Policy and begin the drafting on the Dress Code Policy. A decision on compulsory vs non-compulsory uniform will be decided by School Council early Term 2. The review and updating of the Dress Code Policy aims to be finalised by end of the Term 2 with an implementation timeline for any changes.

It was also discussed that we have a School Review this year. The process begins with self-reflection, there will be opportunities for staff, student and parent focus groups to participate. The Review itself is then held in Term 4.

There were no other reports and the meeting closed. We look forward to welcoming newly elected councillors.
