Grade 5 Home Learning Snapshot - Term 3/Week 10

Writing
This week students will develop one of their favourite short stories they created last week, e.g. horror, science fiction, fantasy and adventure stories - into a story. They will follow The Writing Process all the way from Pre-writing to Publishing their work. Students will share this story with their peers in a Writing Session on Thursday.
Word Study
Students will continue to practise 30 "codes" of the English language through watching videos uploaded by their teachers.
This week students will apply their knowledge of the spelling and reading rules to complete word inquiries.
Reading
This week students will be revising the reading strategies they have learnt in the past two terms. Each day they will practise a different reading strategy and apply that strategy when reading their independent reading books. The strategies will include; inferencing, text connections and summarising.
Maths
Next week, students will complete their final assessments in fractions, decimals and percentages. These will include:
- Monday ( a shorter Essential Assessment - completed by themselves)
- Tuesday ( a longer Essential Assessment online with teachers from 9 - 10.30).
For the remainder of the week students will design their own fraction, decimal or percentages board game.
Unit of Inquiry
Next week students will start exploring online Virtual Markets in place of our usual Market Day which is held at school during Term 4. This will provide students with valuable learning opportunities as we adapt to new ways of doing business. We have never had an online Virtual Market. This is a new project for all of us which means we will all be learning together. What's really fantastic about our situation is that we are right at the forefront of this new and exciting development - we are learning by doing. It has been great to see students already thinking about products that could be sold on an online Virtual Market.
Students will be developing a business plan as well as their own exclusive product logo. They will be learning about USPs (Unique Selling Propositions) and what makes their product distinctive from their competitors. Students will then use their well-developed persuasive skills to create a marketing concept for their product which will outshine their competitors. At this stage their product will only be a prototype of an item that they could sell if we were to have an actual online Virtual Market.
Wellbeing - Zones Of Regulation
We have looked at different sized problems ranging from BIG through medium to small glitches. We have also looked at different sized REACTIONS to these problems. When one’s reactions matches the size of the problem, this helps others to feel more comfortable. Understanding the relationship between the SIZE of the problem and the SIZE of the reaction – helps us feel good about ourselves and our feelings too.
