About the Australian Mathematics Competition

The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) was introduced in Australia in 1978 as the first Australia-wide mathematics competition for students. It has become the largest single event on the Australian education calendar, allowing students to attempt the same tasks on the same day in over 30 countries around the globe.

Running since 1978, the AMC is for students of all standards. Students are asked to solve 30 problems in 60 minutes (Years 3–6) or 75 minutes (Years 7–12). The problems are designed to test mathematical thinking rather than focus on calculations themselves, thus such questions are designed so that they can be answered just as quickly without a calculator as with one. The problems get more difficult through the competition, so that at the end they are challenging to the most gifted students. Students of all standards will make progress through the problems, and also be challenged along the way.

The AMC is available both in hard copy and online format, with no difference in the questions or time requirements.

Visually impaired and distance students

We would like the AMC to be available to all students who wish to participate. We have special arrangements for visually impaired students and distance education organisations. Home schooled students or students whose school chooses not to participate are free to make arrangements to sit under the supervision of another school.

The AMC may be held on a different date by special arrangement in some countries.

The Green Team

On Thursday 25th of May, the Green Team will be harvesting the olives that grow along Eglinton Street outside Room 7.

If you would like to join in the fun, you are more than welcome (as long as you have a Working with Children’s Check and sign in at the office!) We will meet in Room 17 at the start of lunch and head outside from there.

Nothing would make us happier than to share the olives with our community. If you are interested in receiving a portion of these olives, please leave a re-usable container in the Green Team’s tub (at office) prior to Thursday 25th May.

You will be asked to fill out a green card to leave inside the container that looks like this:

If you would like to make a gold coin donation, the Green Team will make sure that this money goes towards redeveloping the Vegie Patch and continuing the work that the Gardening Club began last year. You can leave your gold coin donation inside of your container along with the green card.

Your filled container will be returned to your child on the afternoon of Thursday 25th May.

There are many different ways to pickle or preserve your olives. Here is a link to some different ways to pickle them after they’ve been picked!

Scienceworks excursion

Last Friday Room 4 went to Scienceworks. The first thing we did was have our morning tea, then we went to the Planetarium. It was fun, we watched ‘Tycho To The Moon’. We watched another thing but I do not know what it is called. The whole thing was fun.

Then we split into groups, in my group there were four people. The people in my group were Winter, Olivia, Alessia and me. We went to Nitty Gritty Super City. Then we went on the bus. It took a long time but I didn’t care and then we came back to school and I went to the Mother’s Day stall.

When some of the kids came back from the Mother’s Day stall the bell rang. I rushed outside. I went straight away because I was really tired and a little bit sick and as soon as I got home I layed on the couch and then my dad said ‘Go to bed because I want to watch the footy on TV’, so I went to bed.
