by Stacy Pouliot, teacher of Mathematics
Students have been working with Mathspace, an interactive adaptive website that provides lessons, tutorials and tasks designed so every student has a personalised learning experience. Summative tasks were linked to real-world applications including 'Accessing Money Overseas' (investigating and converting currencies) and 'Take Your Medicine' (exploring dose amounts for children).
Accessing Money Overseas
Students converted currencies using exchange rates and percentages to better understand money in the context of global travel, along with what to expect in regards to fees usually involved in banking. They created PowerPoint presentations, synergising the excitement of travel with the practical requirements of proper funding.
Take Your Medicine
This task allowed students to explore and understand the ways doctors and other medical health professionals determine the most appropriate dosage of medication for those under 18 years of age. They were able to see the importance of performing proper calculations, explore the different formulas used to calculate these dosages and understand how the use of age, height and weight of an individual can be best used by health professionals to determine the safest and most effective dose for young people.
