Recycling challenge

This week in Sustainability, our Pathways students were busy building their scarecrows using recycled materials such as plastic milk containers, old pillow covers, string, hessian, stockings, and rags, straw for filling. Bamboo leaves were used to join milk containers together. Once the arms and legs are attached, students will use recycled clothes to dress the scarecrows. Used CD's will be attached to the arms to move in the breeze. Thanks to Mr. Scott who attached the wooden frames to help us get started.

Biodiversity goal

Mr. Scott has been very busy in the woodwork room. He cleverly repurposed a wooden step he no longer needed from home and added extra pieces to create an insect hotel. Students are involved in stripping bamboo leaves off the stems to cut stems into small pieces to fit different compartments. Later bark, twigs and pine cones can be added to fill in other sections. Different sized holes will provide a home to many different kinds of insects. Once the insect hotel is completed it will go into the garden behind the cottage. We will also be planting a special flower mix of seeds to encourage beneficial bugs and butterflies into our garden and habitat area.

Thank you to ES Gen for her kind donation of bamboo and Mr. Scott for his clever woodwork skills.
