YEAR 5/6 LEADERS NEWS

SHARK TANK

As part of their ‘Be Compassionate, Choose Justice’ R.E. unit, the Year 5/6 students are learning about creating social enterprises.

As part of our Science/ Technology/ Sustainability Inquiry unit, they are designing upcycled products from old clothing to stop it from going to landfill.

Their creativity is astounding with some incredibly innovative ideas.

New skills are being learnt in the designing and constructing of the products.

The Year 5/6 students are using their business and economics skills to create business plans, business names, logos and a range of product ideas.

This term they have conducted market research with younger classes, and are getting ready to pitch their wonderful ideas to the investors, early next term. We have also had a guest speaker from 'Food for Health', talk to the students about launching a product from birth to being on the shelves of Coles and Woolworths.

Take a look at this clip showing the Year 5/6 students conducting their market research and also learning about product presentations from our guest speaker.

Yr 6 Leaders - Staff Meeting

 Monday 20th June 2022

On Monday, 20th June, the McKillop House leaders presented what they have been doing on their leadership roles in Semester One. Here is their presentation.

Lucy W:

Today we would like to tell you the staff, what we have been doing as the school leaders this semester.

Firstly….How it feels To be a year 6 LEADER at St Cecilia’s…

Year 6 so far has been amazing, we have had so many new opportunities that have helped develop our leadership skills . You will hear from our McKillop Year 6 leaders today and they will explain to you what they have achieved so far this year as a leader.

The different areas of LEADERSHIP we will discuss will be:

  • ASPIRE LEADERSHIP DAY
  • DEBATING PROGRAM
  • AGED CARE VISITS
  • SAILING
  • FOUNDATION BUDDIES
  • INTERSCHOOL SPORT
  • ASSEMBLY PRESENTERS
  • AND CAMP

This year each house has experienced the different facet of leadership throughout the semester.  For example we rotate the assembly presentation and aged care visits between each house group. We also rotate with Unlocking and locking the gates and meeting up with the S.R.C.s.  So far this year we are able to visit age care. When I went I met with a lady called Juley. She told me about how she loved learning about languages. It was so interesting to learn about history in their lives.

Camp:

  1. Activities: hut building, kayak, archery
  2. Accommodation: Camping and cabins

Hut building we had to create hut that were waterproof with the natural resources around us. If your hut wasn't done when the timer went off, you would get water poured over your hut and if it wasn’t built properly you would get wet. We had to learn time management and getting things done or else you would get wet.

Kayaking was great. We got to play cops and robbers, and also do lots of races. We learnt how to use a kayak and hand eye coordination. After that we got to do 2 more activities, raft building and archery. Building rafts was a really good learning exprince because all of us were rookies so we didn’t really build great rafts. We had to design and build our raft. If your raft was not built properly then you would fall in.

In archery we had to shoot really ARROWS and some people even got a bullseye. You had to              be carefull with the arrows. I almost got a bullseye but missed it by an inch. You had to pay attention or you would miss the target completely.

We really learnt a lot of skills at camp and we had a really good time

Interschool Sport : The leadership skills that we learned while doing all of these sports are how to take responsibility for all of the equipment and to get ready for the game. It has also taught us to organise the teams but make them fair.

  1. Boys netball:in the boys netball we have been going really well and yet to lose but as expected all of the boys have had a lot of  playing and talking to some of the kids that they  know from other schools. And there were a lot of smiles going around the room when we heard we could possibly be going to division. We think of this as a great opportunity to learn how to take care with no one else to take care of us.
  2. Girls netball: The Girls have also been going incredible and have had great sportsmanship. Even if they lose they will be grateful to actually play. After every game the captains say “Three cheers for the umpires, Three cheers for whatever school they have played. They have won pretty much all their games and hopefully are able to go to division. Both of the netball team play really well and have really good sportsmanship.
  3. soccer:As all of the other teams the soccer team has been going really well but sadly lost a couple too many games to be able to go  to division but put up a great fight and did not ever give up and had some incredible sportsmanship and they won how they lost.
  4.  Softball:Or as Ms Walsh would put it Fully Loaded Softball is a great sport to play it is different from normal softball because when you start you have people on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd base. All the sports we play for Inter School Sports we play with great sportsmanship and kindness. Inter School Sort has been so much fun and I hope I do it in High School.

Hugh:

Sailing:At the end of term one we had sailing. This was a great activity for all of the 5/6s. We learnt new skills like the different areas of the boat and different turns. I think the most important thing we learnt was teamwork skills because you can't run a sailing boat without a team. This year sailing was very different to last year seeing as we were on different boats this year we used pacers and we were in a different area. As i said before we learnt new teamwork skills and that can help in the future at school and when we get a job. We also had beach games. It was nice to calm down with beach games after sailing. I took some leadership skills away from like you always have to listen to your team and always trust them you also have to share things around like on the boat we had to share positions and give everyone a turn. I think this was a great opportunity for all of us as it taught us all of these skills for leadership that we can use. We also all got a real respect for each other by learning our strengths. I really think this is a great opportunity and we should continue this.

Buddies

1.We have done a lot of activities. One of my favourite activities is PMP. All the year sixes have helped the little preps do sport. Some of the parents also came and helped. It was really fun helping some of the preps on different types of activities. I love being a buddy knowing they are looking up to me

2 Another one of my favourite activities is the Big Bad Wolf with the preps

Had to build a mini house out of straws or sticks or marshmallows and paper and had to build a big bad wolf house and when the time was up we had to have a fan to see if it fell over. It was really fun helping the preps build it. Our group did well.55 I now got a bit better with ornazing skills. Buddy's are so awesome to have.

Debating:

  1. In the first term, Mrs DeGeest came and taught us all about debating. She had come in last year to teach us Public Speaking, but this year she taught us
  2. Awards. (It was a real honour to receive an award) From the experience, I learnt how to debate and negotiate important topics. I also learnt how to talk in front of a big crowd. With adults and students alike. It has helped me grow as a leader with my ability to speak confidently and also to feel confident with my speaking skills. I think that debating is a really important skill to learn because it will help you in the future. The debating program is very important, and I think it is of the utmost importance that you continue this program next year and the years to come.

Aspire: On the aspire day we learnt about different types of leaders and how to be better leaders.

The workers came in and spoke to us in the hall for the whole day. We got split into groups and had teamwork games. We had a few stations and our team would have to finish them.  We got to have pizza and drinks for lunch, we did multiple activities like stacking pipes and rolling marbles through them, throwing and balancing games. They all were group activities which helped with leadership skills and group work. We also got to have free dresses. At the end of the day we were all so excited because we got our year 6 polo shirt. We had BFFT’s (Best Friend For Today), they instructed us to go with people we don’t know very well as our BFFT’s, we did some activities with our BFFT’s.

Lucy W
