What's Happening?

Yr 3 Excursion to the Zoo

On Wednesday 15th June the Year 3 level bravely ventured out into the cold weather to visit the zoo. Despite the rainy start to the day, we were very fortunate to have a mostly clear day to explore the Melbourne Zoo. The children were very keen to visit the gorillas as they have been reading The One and Only Ivan in class, and they were amazed to see a silverback gorilla just like Ivan. Children enjoyed learning about the many animals they saw and in particular the animal they had chosen to write an information report on. It was a wonderful day and there have been lots of stories about what the children saw and learnt, and the wonder of visiting the animals in the zoo.

Beekeeper Visit

Our Gardening teacher, Anna arranged for a very special guest to come in last week. Christa, a professional beekeeper came to talk to some of our junior students. Below Franky show just how much they learnt from the experience.

European Honey Bees

Did you know that the European honey bee came to Australia 200 years ago?  However they have been good for our environment here!

Did you know that honey bees have two stomachs? When it collects the nectar from the flowers it might get tired on the way back to the hive so it eats the nectar from one of the stomachs.

I can’t believe that the larvae are fed Royal Jelly for only three days and the Queen gets Royal Jelly her whole life.

Do not be scared of a bee! If you see one do not annoy it because it is just trying to protect its hive.

Not all bees work. The male bee which is called a “Drone” does not do any work. Sadly if there is little honey in the hive they are kicked out in Winter.

The queen bee lays all the eggs. The adults do not get to lay any eggs. It is pretty weird, right?  Sometimes the hive dies and the bees don’t survive.

Christa got to make a candle out of beeswax. She picked up the bees wax mould and carefully placed a wick at the top and rolled it. It is now our prayer candle..

Bees are so important!

We would not have any fruit without bees because bees pollinate flowers. If they did not pollinate the fruit it is not alright to eat or it won’t grow at all.

Wind Powered Cars in Year 2

As part of their unit on being Eco Warriors, the Year 2 students investigated a renewable source of energy, whilst also recycling materials to create wind powered cars. They worked in pairs to design, build, test and refine their cars. That had so much fun and learnt a great range of new skills and knowledge.

A Fond Farewell to a Friend

The year 2's had a farewell celebration for one of their classmates, Annabella. We will all be sad to see you go Annabella and hope you enjoyed your movie and popcorn afternoon.

A special farewell to Nikilson (Foundation) and Anabella (Year 2) as they commence a new chapter with their beautiful families!

Bec was really impressed with how well the children listened, answered her questions and respected the special artefacts she brought in. She also comended Miss French for her class management skills. Bec also said that the St Cecilia's students were an absolute delight to teach!

The artefacts included sharks eggs, starfish and a number of other sea creatures.
