What’s Been Happening in Grade 5/6

Last term the Discovery topic for the grade 5/6’s was ‘Market Day’. Students explored the nature of work and reasons why businesses exist. They investigated enterprising behaviours and how they could be applied practically through the design of their own market stall. They explored profit and loss, budgeting and developed simple financial plans to support their market stall initiatives.

The students also learned about charities and why it is important to support and help others when we can. Next week, Monday 17th October is Market Day! All of the student's hard work will be on display with their products available to purchase.  All profits will be donated to the charities supported by the Social Enterprise program.

Here is what some of our 5/6’s enjoyed about the unit.

Stella - I am a grade six student at Bundoora Primary School, so for my contribution to the market day, the other grade six’s and I are recycling t-shirts that would otherwise be sent out to the ocean as textile waste. We have taken old t-shirts and are using paint markers, sharpies, and a wide variety of other pens. The t-shirts will be sold at the market day, and all the money raised will go to the social enterprise charities.

Arlia - I’m doing the 5/6 project with the year sixes we are making t-shirts. Something I learnt is how important it is to give back when you can. Luella - On market day I'm working with the 5’s in my group and we are making lollie bags. We are doing this to make money for the social enterprise charities.

Harriet - The grade 5 and 6 students have been working on creating a product for market day, it has been so fun. My partner and I made stickers! Why did we create a product? All of the profits will go to charities, these charities support underprivileged people.

Destiny - Market Day is when the year five/sixes create products. The year fives got to make their own products such as stress balls, slime, stickers, lollies bags etc. The year sixes brought in some old t-shirts to draw on and use cardboard stencils to make the t-shirts more interesting and creative. The year sixes also tie-dyed shirts.

When will it be? Market day is on the 17th of October. Why are we doing this? We are doing it to raise money for charity.

Costa - The Year 6’s are selling t-shirts at market day to raise money for our charities. The year 6’s has made our own t-shirts to sell at our own stall, we have markers to decorate the shirts and we also dyed our shirts, and they look really cool.

Zack - Market Day sells where the five six students snake some products including T-shirtsand comics. We are doing this to support our charities because it is not fair we get to live anice life and they can't.

Amelia - Market Day is a day when your kid gets to buy things for themselves, the grade 5’smaking products, like drawings and cards. Year 6’s made hand decorated shirts. Thereare bundles, solos and duos and there are size sections. They did tie dye, tracing and colouring in the trace outs. My group has drawings and birthday cards and for every purchase they will get a free raffle ticket. We only have 22 tickets to get a dragon drawing who is protecting their sibling from danger.
