Exploring our Natural World through books

Exploration of our natural world in library lessons has been enriched by reading books by Sami Bayly, a 26-year-old author and illustrator from Newcastle, NSW. Bayly has released three books, The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Ugly Animals, The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Dangerous Animals and The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Peculiar Pairs in Nature.

She trained in scientific illustration through a Bachelor of Natural History Illustration (Honours) at the University of Newcastle. Her preferred medium is watercolour and she loves to illustrate any animals that are weird, wonderful or ugly. Bayly has won multiple awards for her books and been published in both Australia and overseas.

Examining fossil teeth of some of the animals we have been studying has been greatly enjoyed by our students. This activity has supported our reading and learning about many different animals – weird, wonderful and ugly. Magnifying these fascinating fossils on a screen has allowed students to study them more closely.

We are continuing to purchase a wide range of new fiction and non-fiction books and look forward to displaying them in our amazing new library when it opens in the middle of next year.
