Special Events

Throughout the year

International Women’s Day

At the International Women's Day breakfast, Roqya, Nae Koe, Allie, Indyanna, Kate, and I had a terrific time, and it was an honour to meet a role model like Frances Diver. We all talked to Ms. Diver about her career in healthcare and accomplishments, such as becoming the CEO of Barwon Health.  It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me; I aim and aspire to work in the medical field, and being able to speak with Frances Diver about her career in healthcare was incredible. As a young aspiring healthcare worker, I'm always on the lookout for outstanding role models to inspire me to continue my studies and one day become a doctor, and I'm happy to say that Frances is one of them. - Aleena Eftikhari

Student Leadership Summit in Sydney

Over the past decade, each year the Australian Business and Community Network (ABCN) has provided 30- 40 students across Australia an opportunity to receive a scholarship that provides $7000 ($2000 in both Year 11 and Year 12, and $3000 in the first year of tertiary studies), mentoring from a member of the ABCN companies/organisation and events linking them with other students across the nation.

In this national program we are proud to currently have two 3rd year scholars - Kamran Jaan and Jury Noe, three 2nd year scholars - Shar K’pru Htoo, Tabasom Azimi and Aziza Minani and a 1st year scholar - Jevic Mwanza, In 2023 4 more will join the ranks and we wish them great success. Michaela Apps, Roqya Husseini, Christopher Ocampo and Soe Mya Than Ler Wah

After several years of COVID-impacted programs, on the 27-28 April 2022, Jevic joined others to attend the ABCN Leadership Summit held in Sydney.  The event aimed to bring all of the students awarded scholarships together to learn about each other and celebrate their leadership and aspirations.

During our time there, we participated in a variety of workshops. The first was held at the Australian Theatre for Young People, where the group engaged in a variety of icebreaker activities and grounding exercises. After the workshop, we walked back to our hotel, enjoying the sights of Sydney, including the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Later that night, we went to a formal business dinner where we got to meet a variety of people who are well-known in their fields. During the dinner, we learned about their professional lives and what it would be like to follow in their footsteps.

The following day, we had an early breakfast before heading to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia for sessions led by Maree Drury and Craig Griffin. Maree is the ABC's head of programme development; she led a financial capability session in which she discussed the concept of financial capability and gave us exercises to help us develop our understanding of it. Craig is the executive director of the Macquarie Group's BFS marketing and growth. His session was memorable. during his time with us, he discussed various leadership skills and methods for developing them. He discussed creating short-term and long-term goals, as well as ways to speak more firmly to get your point across. which was very useful in a business setting where everyone has an idea that needs to be heard and time management is essential.

BOOKWEEK 2022

In Week 7, we were excited to finally be able to celebrate Book Week together onsite at school. This year's theme was ‘Dreaming with Eyes Open’. Students were asked to come dressed up as their favourite book characters for the campus parades.

This year the emphasis for dress-up costumes was on make-your-own and make-do.  Masks are always a great idea for all students to be able to participate.

It was so great to see so many students dressing up from their favorite books last week! We had a wide variety of characters and the students loved sharing which book their character came from. Throughout the week we read lots of the books nominated for picture book of the year. A big thank you for all the effort you put into getting your children dressed up!

BOOK WEEK – August 2022 - Theme “Dreaming with your eyes open”

Book week is celebrated every year to highlight the importance of reading. This year's theme was “Dreaming with eyes open” and encourages readers to explore their own story, to listen to Country as the first storyteller and to learn from friends that help you along the way.

Our playgroup favourite was “The Wonky Donkey”

by Craig Smith

Children love funny stories. The Wonky Donkey is so funny and the laughter from reading this book with little ones is so contagious.

The Wonky Donkey is a children’s book and song which talks about a donkey who has three legs and one eye. It is a funny cumulative story using many descriptive words to describe how the donkey looks, smells and what he looks like.

Australian Cricket Coach visits NBC

At the start of August, the College was so fortunate to welcome Australian Cricket Coach - Andrew McDonald. The visit which was made possible through the Lords Taverners - a charitable organisation who have taken our school under their wing through the past 4 years, was such a special opportunity for our students to interact with such a high profile and inspiring leader. Andrew really was just so generous with his time and with the investment and interest he genuinely showed in our students and the programs he viewed. He then sat down for a Podcast with hosts Falk Davis, Stoofa and Riley Ward. Hear his and their great work here LINK.

RUOK? Day 2022

Every year the College seeks to support mental health in students and in community. Across the campuses special activities took place.

You would have noticed some yellow balloons, posters, and hopefully conversations where we were checking in on our friends, and fellow students.  RUOK? Day is an important day in the calendar for our College Wellbeing Team, as it raises awareness about caring for our community, and starting meaningful conversations with the people we love and care for – regardless of whether we are qualified as wellbeing professionals or not. RUOK.org gives us some helpful and easy tips to consider when asking a friend “RUOK?”

At the College we had amazing fun days at the P-8 Campuses and great enjoyment at Goldsworthy with a student led podcast  as well.

Not only have we celebrated RUOK? Day this term, we have also partnered with Foodbank this term to deliver a 4 week cooking program for students and their families.  This has been a great fun program, where students and families learnt some new skills in the kitchen, and had a great time at our Tallis Campus kitchen facility.  With a number of families involved in this pilot program where all the feedback we received was fantastic (as was the food we cooked!), we hope to expand this cooking at NBC initiative in future, getting more students and families involved in our community.

If you would like food support, or if you have the capacity to donate to this great cause, head over to Foodbank.org.au for more information.

Geelong Schools’ Music and Movement Festival

The College Concert Band and Rock Bands performed at Costa Hall, Deakin University Waterfront Campus.  Students from all four Junior Campuses set up their instruments ready to play the music that they had been preparing for the Festival. The band presented a program of three works, Blizzard Blues, Tikal and Penguin Promenade and were the opening item for the afternoon session at 1:00 PM. Congratulations, to all students who were performing in front of an audience for the first time.

1zac Yr6 Wexford  Going to the Geelong Schools’ Music and Movement Festival was fun and enjoyable to do something new that I had never done before. My Nan, Pa and my friend’s Mum were in the audience at Costa Hall to watch me perform.  Sitting on stage waiting for the Music Festival to start, was really hot. This was because the spot lights and stage lights were on. Playing the band music was fun.  Going through the music before the performance helped me to have less mistakes on stage. I felt grateful when I heard the audience clapping and that I had done a really good performance.

Maddison Yr8 Hendy  I really enjoyed seeing the other schools perform and every school chose something different, making it memorable. My favourite performance was presented by the Year 11 and 12 NBC Rock Bands, they were amazing!     I think our Concert Band did a fantastic job, considering it was my first time performing on stage for an audience. I loved the experience!

Sharli Yr 6 Hendy   When we arrived the ushers took us to the ‘Green Room’ back stage, where we got our instruments ready to play. A short time later, we went on stage to set up our chairs and put our music on the stands. We waited about ten minutes for the man to introduce us and announce our set, Blizzard Blues, Tikal and Penguin Promenade.

Tia Yr8 Hendy   I had a great time performing at the Music Festival and specifically enjoyed hearing the NBC Year 11 Rock Band.  I felt a little bit nervous but having the two hour practice helped me to feel more confident. Once we arrived at Costa Hall I had no worries. I think that we played really well on stage. Overall, it was a great experience!

Haylie Yr6 Hendy  On the day of the performance I was a bit scared sometimes, but not all the time. I liked playing on stage a lot and I love playing the trumpet in the band. When we started playing it was hard to hear so I listened to the other trumpet players and joined in, then it was easy. We sat and watched all of the other schools perform. The Year 11 NBC Rock Band were really good playing on the stage. I loved doing the band concert on stage at the Music Festival.

Rosy Yr8 Wexford It was my first time performing in front of an audience. When we performed I was scared at first because I had made some mistakes at the rehearsal at Peacock Campus. I finally played the three band pieces correctly as I remembered it from band.

Halloween Activities at the Kindergarten

The IMPACT Year 10 students following a huge success with their puppet play that they showed our Early Learning Centre children recently were back in Performance and Presentation mode for Halloween.

They designed and put in place a raft of activities to take to the Kinder using their arts skills.  Dance, Visual, Performing and Creative were the art forms they shared.

GROWTH - The Year 6 Scholarship

We honour our Year 6 cohort who excel in one of the college's 4 pillars of excellence - Either The Arts, Academic, Science & Technology and Sport, Phys Ed & Health. A presentation to 28 Scholarship recipients was held with parent guests and we honoured these outstanding young people who will hopefully lead others in pursuit of excellence in their fields of study during secondary school.

Not sure if or when we ever stop being big kids. The Year 12 may have started the day as ll grown up but give them a big slide and the little kid appears. This series of pictures shows the terrific multicultural relationship we build at Northern Bay College

Men's T20 World Cup -special duties

Each campus was invited to send students from Years 3-6 to the T20 World Cup events being held across Australia and of course at Kardinia Park. It was a great experience for those whose names were selected and they were centre stage with flags. There was disappointment for the many who put their hand up to go. Places were limited and hopefully the ones who attended really had a great experience. One gave it a 9!

Halloween at the Family Learning Centre

Celebrating Children’s week, it was invaluable to have Amanda Baulch and the Year 10 IMPACT students to create many fun and tactile activities with the kinder children. The IMPACT students made lots of sensory activities for the Family Centre Hallowe’en party. The party was a great success and well attended by lots of spidermen, dinosaurs, witches, skeletons, pirates and fairies in spite of the rain and wind.  Zoe from Corio Library read us a story and we all sang Hallowe’en songs. And of course the baby animals from Fun farm 2 U got lots of attention!

Just look at these smiles!

Prep 100 Days

The 2022 Prep students celebrated their 100th Day of Primary school with celebrations at all p-8 Campuses. This celebration is an extra special one this year as students have achieved this milestone completely on site - the first cohort to do so this decade!! Once again, staff at NBC go the extra yard in celebrating this day with our kids through the dress ups and celebrations. Thank you!!
