We had a terrific excursion to the Geelong art gallery and you can read my full comment on the programs page as well as find out about other great things we do in Year 7 and 8

Year 9's worked alongside local Artist Emily Rastas, to create a wearable piece of art. Through creating a design on their own piece of fabric, the pieces were then sewn together to create a dress on a Mannequin. The result a wearable piece of Art work!
Our Year 7/8's started Term 2 with a trip to Melbourne to participate in several workshops at the Victorian Art Centre. The day started learning the history of Music in the Vault, looking at a wide variety of things that inspired them in the music world. They then finished with a workshop with world renowned Rap Artist Mantra and wrote their own raps, with some very promising rap artists emerging. Students then turned their talents to shoe design, working with local shoe and fashion designer Emily Rastas. Emily took the students through the planning process of design, and the finished results have been amazing!!
Year 9 - Our Year 9's have been learning about life way back when stories and radio plays were an important part of family life. After working with local authors, sound artists and radio personal, the students brought their skills together to write and create their very own radio play. With the prompt "The Knock", the students divided themselves into two groups - the writers / performers and the sound artists. The result, a very chilling piece of writing, enhanced by some equally as chilling sound effects about "That One Night In October". In a few weeks, students will be heading into the recording studio at Don't Poke The Bear, to record their piece, which we look forward to sharing with you.
Year 10 - After working with local book illustrator and an animation company in term 1, the Year 10 students turned their hand to costume and fashion design. Local artists Emily has worked for many years as a costume designer on many big theatre shows in London as well as video clips, and other local productions. She took the students through the process of designing and drawing their different designs and creating a portfolio of work, before the creating could begin. Students then created an outfit for a toy, learning how to sew and decorate, using a wide range of different materials and mediums. They then turned their hand to fashion design, turning a plain denim jacket into a work of art, based around a theme.
Celebration of achievement is a big partof our work at the college and the 7/ 8 IMPACT - ASCEND group had a wonderful afternoon showcasing their work to family members and visitors, Over first semester they have learnt new skills and developed expertise in Bollywood Dancing, Puppet making, water colour painting, drama, shoe designing, rap writing and Tech support.
It is exciting to share this work from our Year 9 IMPACT students. Students have been working over the past few weeks on an old-fashioned radio show complete with sound effects and exciting storyline. Take a listen to this really fun and exciting offering here.
Occasionally schools are offered a few tickets for productions that run in Melbourne while at other times Innovative Arts Programs like IMPACT at Northern Bay can help in the negotiation of price reductions. There are other partnerships such as the Northern Bay Challenge with extensive contacts that can persuade production Companies to support students who have limited access to arts productions.
This year saw two kinds of access for our students. Year 9/10's in IMPACT had the magical opportunity to attend Hamilton The Musical at Her Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne. Many of these students had seen this show on Streaming services therefore, to see it live was a dream come true. A major focus of this Pillar of Excellence in the College is to take students who have an interest in the arts - say - water colour paints and provide insight across all of the Arts to give as wide a scope of career options available. From the set of Hamilton we can see a number of skills that are required that students may never have considered.
We also had a group of students who attended the Victorian Opera's production of The Wizard Of Oz. Once again an amazing opportunity thanks to Ken Harrison the chairman of the Northern Bay Challenge. This production was in Italian and above the screen was a translation. It was performed at the Palais Theatre and really took many of the group out of familiar territory. Of course the story was well known and made things easier but I saw only a little because I was fascinated by the faces of our audience members - there was real joy and wonder throughout much of the performance.
A major point of interest was the orchestra sitting centre stage and a very different idea to other shows they may go and see. The Students and Mr Diamond gave up their evening to go in the school bus (The Students think he is a great Driver!)
YEAR 7/8 IMPACT - ASCEND
Our Year 7/8 students have been working on IMPACT and SEED Murals for our buildings at Peacock campus. The students have been working hard to embrace both pillars of excellence in this signage, so do not forget to look out for it from the road at Peacock campus early next term
Year 9 IMPACT
Our Year 9 students completed a unit of work on Puppetry. Throughout this unit, students learnt how to make a variety of puppets and how to bring them alive to an audience. The next ask was to create and perform a puppet show. Finding an audience was easy because next door at Goldsworthy is the wonderful Early Learning Centre and our youngest students had a special time. However, I think that maybe some of the Staff and definitely the Year 9 IMPACT group probably had an even better time! Another of the team also record the show.
Once again our choir and dancers were amazing. Their stamina, cheerfulness, performances and behaviour were outstanding. Thank you all and a special appreciation from all our team to our parents
This was the culmination of 2 years of gaining understanding about multiple aspects of the Arts and the various pathways taken by people in the Arts Industry.
Particular thanks to Mr Diamond who drove the school bus to the city and stayed with us till after we had been to be audience members at the project on Channel 10 with a live screening. Mr Sapwell was terrific coming to get us and drive us back.
While we were in the city it was not the best of Spring weather - but wet and windy we still had a great time. The activities included a class at RMIT, attending Come From Away - a terrific live theatre show. We went to Acme and to the National Gallery and caught fresh air on Southbank. We had a sensational experience at Artvo and a bit of relaxed enjoyment at the Cats Cafe (yes it is overrun with cats)
Mr Marco Polo (or should I say Mr Diamond) also led us on a Scavenger hunt in the city art areas and a relaxing mountain HIKE!!! through the beautiful Botanic Gardens.
One of the highlights was of course Artvo with the amazing optical illusions
