Our students on Show

A round up of our students at work and play

African Drumming

VCAL students had a special visit from a highly skilled African drummer. The noise and participation levels were top level!

In Year 7 and 8, our maths program is heavily based around Math Pathway, where students complete mini lessons, targeted intervention, independent module work and rich learning each fortnight before completing a mini assessment which identifies their growth and effort for the fortnight.

When summer was around

In what seems like a long time ago, when the sun shone, our youngest students went to check out the waterfront and the Bollards.

Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge

2022 will be remembered as the year Northern Bay College students, from prep through to year 10, read 23,572 books while participating in the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge. 579 students successfully completed it. This is an increase of 150 students from our figures last year.  Our top performing campus was Tallis, led by Maz Kozdra.  73% of their registered students were successful.  That is impressive.  Over 5000 titles were recorded as finished by the Tallis students.

Thank you as well to Shirley Muxworthy, Maxine Tippett, Claire Telfer, Melissa Cropley and Lisa Clark from the other campuses.  You recorded information, recommended titles, monitored progress and verified titles. As a team, you have created a fun and rewarding experience for the students involved.

We look forward to our VPRC data will look like in 2023. . .

School Based Apprenticeships

My name is Tara Lynch and I am the SBAT Coordinator across six schools. I have been visiting all students onsite, to take photos and promote success stories. Please see images of Northern Bay students, working hard at their School Based Apprenticeships.

Northern Bay has many students completing School Based Apprenticeships with the National Food Institute. Students are completing Certificate 11 in Warehousing Operations, Certificate 11 in Food Processing and Certificate 11 in Horticulture.

The training involves on the job work at GDP, Make and Bake (GITTC) and Corio Community Centre. The students also complete theory sessions, to learn more about their selected industry. There will be many SBAT opportunities for students again in 2023 and some new offerings.

Out and About Again

From May our students were finally able to get on buses and enjoy excursions again. During this term the Years  3-6 students visited ArtVo where they stepped into a world of optical illusions with larger than life murals, experiencing an art museum in a whole new way. ArtVo photos will provide students with additional ideas for their Writers Notebook seeds.

Welcome back to on site!

It has been another great start to Term 2, with many aspects of school life getting back to pre COVID times with community events on-site, assemblies face to face again and families back in the school environment to help support student learning. Here are some photos of our families enjoying a session of Investigation with their child.

Persistence through the Arts

Year 10 Media Photography students were finally able to shoot on location!

Excursions to Geelong Botanical Gardens, Balyang Sanctuary and Geelong Waterfont were well attended resulting in successful photoshoots. Students worked with both digital and 35mm film SLR cameras to produce their images.

Back in the classroom they also experienced digital and analogue post-production techniques. The greater challenge was taking still photos on light sensitive film, then developing their own film to produce negatives and selected frames from their contact sheets. Students persisted with the challenges of manual camera settings, then persisted in the darkroom to enlarge a series of black and white shots from their own negatives, all while recording the process in their folios; resulting in a range of dynamic imagery.

Employability Skills

VCAL students presented their end of semester enterprise project reviews.  The students were able to reflect on the successes and challenges of their business ventures in the first semester.  It was great to see the growth in employability skills and the excellent work that has occurred. The presentations ranged from sustainable wood products, crafts and the operation of School Yard Beans.

To enrich our students' experience of Government, all campuses (Years 7 and 8) had an excursion to Melbourne to explore Government House, Parliament House and the added experiences of being in the big smoke. While the weather was not kind to our students, the life experiences they received were priceless.

Some students went on their first tram ride, while others had never been to Melbourne before. A highlight for some students was as simple as purchasing food from Chinatown, Starbucks and other city convenience stores.

Year 3/4

Students in 3/4s were learning about Forces this term. Students have had the opportunities to watch water rockets travel into the sky, make catapults, create hovercrafts with balloons and CD discs, make parachutes and learn with magnets. These activities helped with their understanding of the topic of Forces and gave a hands-on learning approach to the topic.

Highlighting Preps - Werribee Zoo

All the Prep students attended an excursion to Werribee Zoo!  Students were so excited to go and see all the different animals they have been learning about throughout this term. A major highlight would have definitely been the Safari bus. Students got up close with Giraffes, Zebras and Rhinos. While at the zoo, students also participated in the ‘Habitat Heros’ program. Students explored the Habitat Haven using their senses and participated in the open-ended play-based activities and learnt about how living things grow, change and survive in nature.

State School Spectacular 2022

Once again our choir and dancers were amazing. Their stamina, cheerfulness, performances and behaviour were outstanding. Thank you all and a special appreciation from all our team  to our parents.

Go to 7PLus and see the show - will be available for just over 3 weeks.

Halloween Activities at the Kindergarten

The IMPACT Year 10 students following a huge success with their puppet play that they showed our Early Learning Centre children recently were back in Performance and Presentation mode for Halloween.

They designed and put in place a raft of activities to take to the Kinder using their arts skills.  Dance, Visual, Performing and Creative were the art forms they shared. Again - find time to have a look at the IMPACT page or the Family Learning Centre page for some terrific pictures showing how carefully they worked with our children.

A further act of kindness and giving back are our students in Hands on Learning. Their leaders Linda and Rod are always looking for ways to give back to the school community. One group are just finishing off really well constructed LIBRARY Boxes for Big Books for our Campus Libraries. Thank you all. You can see the construction on our Programs page.

GROWTH - Year 7 2023

I have had two special opportunities  recently to meet with students and families. Firstly we held an information afternoon for Year 5 and 6 Families to showcase our outstanding Secondary Education Programs and curriculum delivery at Northern Bay College.

It was often a point raised by families that since we did not physically change buildings or sites at the end of Primary School - we just kept on a Primary School. Nothing could be further from the truth and we work hard to ensure that the year 7 and 8 program is equal to or an improvement on the programs in place at other secondary schools.

The second event was to honour our Year 6 cohort who excel in one of the college's 4 pillars of excellence - The Arts, Academic, Science & Technology and Sport, Phys Ed & Health. A presentation to 30 Scholarship recipients was held with parent guests and we honoured these outstanding young people who will hopefully lead others in pursuit of excellence in their fields of study during secondary school.

 Out of the classroom

Each campus was invited to send students from Years 3-6 to the T20 World Cup events being held across Australia and of course at Kardinia Park. It was a great experience for those whose names were selected and a great disappointment to the many who put their hand up to go. Places were limited and hopefully the ones who attended really had a great experience. One gave it a 9!

YEAR 6 LIGHTNING PREMIERSHIPS

One of the highlights of Spring Term for our Year 6 students is always the Lightning Premiership. Our campuses trained hard for some weeks before the event and it paid off with some terrific performances - and whole heap of fun.

The Sports the children selected from were Badminton, Cricket, Touch Rugby, Rounders and Hot shots Tennis.

Northern Bay students were terrific sports and had a great attitude.  A special congratulations to the Badminton team who took out the championship and progressed to Regionals where they did very well

3/4 PROFESSOR BUNSEN INCURSION

The 3/4’s enjoyed an interactive presentation focusing on the influence heat has on matter. This session investigated the difference between hot and cold and our touch sense, the way heat moves and what happens when heat moves in or out of matter and the associating phase changes. Heat as the product of a chemical reaction such as combustion, sources of heat such as friction, electricity, chemical and the sun. The demonstrations included heat effects such as colour changes, melting, deformation or expansion, combustion.
