The Alumni
NBC OurSchool Alumni
Here at the OurSchool Alumni Program, we have been busy connecting with Alumni from Northern Bay College and our foundation schools, to find out what they have been up to, and inviting them to be a part of our Alumni Program.
It’s been really impressive and exciting, to speak to these Alumni, and to hear their stories and the diverse career pathways they have taken. One theme that comes up a lot when we speak to Alumni, is the power of a great teacher.
Two such examples of alumni speaking on the teachers that shaped them is Samantha Wilson and Yolanda Estaban.
Samantha Wilson is from our class of 2018 and has worked very hard in her Commerce and Arts Degree and has landed herself a graduate job with Deloitte. She mentions the teachers that helped her in her school journey, not just for the academic side, but also for the extra support they provided.
Yolanda Estaban also reflected on the power of a great teacher, who can steer you in the right direction or open your mind to a new idea. Her graphics teacher was so influential, that he inspired her to think big and aim for a career in Design and Architecture, and lucky for us he did. She is now a Senior Lecturer in Architecture and inspiring the next generation.
A great teacher can inspire and help shape a student and we feel lucky to have such talented, hard-working teachers at Northern Bay College.
If you, or someone you know, has an interesting caree or story, we’d love to hear from you at alumni@nbc.vic.edu.au or follow us on our Facebook page
NBC Alumni discuss their journey with our Year 9s.
On Thursday May 19, four past students of Northern Bay College (and even some who go all the way back to Flinders Peak!), visited the Goldsworthy Campus for two panels with our year 9 students. These four alumni have followed diverse paths since leaving our school and discussed their careers as part of National Careers Week. Having completed their Morrisby career profiles in term one, this was a great opportunity to keep building the understanding of our year 9s as they prepare for senior school.
Our guests were Paul Rossiter (Flinders Peak), Megan Francia (Norlane High), Paul Oates (NBC) and recent graduate Samantha Wilson.
The panel was organised and run by NBC’s OurSchool Alumni Program Coordinator, Alison Meredith. Each of the panel members answered a wide range of questions from Alison and shared their current work and study lives, as well as their memories of their time as part of our school community. The diversity of their work lives, from health and safety in a meatworks, to real estate, laboratory science and business consulting at Deloitte, were fantastic examples of the rich and varied pathways on offer to our students at NBC.
The students listened attentively, asking questions about former part-time work and managing life when you are working. Advice from the alumni to do their best, to try to not sweat the small stuff and to take opportunities for part-time work to build skills really cut-through for students.
Our Year 9 Learning Community would like to thank the alumni for generously donating their time to connect with our students as they begin their steps into senior school and to Alison for organising such a great opportunity for students.
2022 NBC Alumni Wrap-up
As the year flies to a close, we look back on the last term, and the year in general, with our new Alumni program at Northern Bay College.
There was already a wide range of enthusiastic and kind alumni in our community, across our foundation schools, Flinders Peak, Norlane High, Corio Tech, Corio Community College and Corio Bay Senior and of course Northern Bay College.
We are so grateful for those who have given up time to give back to their school and enrich the curriculum at Northern Bay College. Being able to draw on the lived experience of our guests makes our subjects come alive.
The benefits are evident, and our students have been respectful, interested, and surprised us with their thoughtful questions.
Being able to draw on the real life and lived experience of Alumni in a variety of career paths makes our subjects come alive and we would like to thank our students, for being so respectful. They have been interested and engaged and surprised our guest speakers with their thoughtful questions.
Alumni Activities Term 4
Career Panel Sessions.
To compliment the year 7 + year 8 curriculum, looking at workplaces, resumes and financial literacy, we welcomed Louise Goodwin, Kristie Robertson and Bec Koeleman to our Peacock Campus, and Cameron Forbes and Tony Harvey to our Hendy Campus.
Our students received first-hand advice on writing a resume, applying for jobs and real-life stories on navigating a career path from our Alumni.
VCAL Step Up
We welcomed back Nicole Makin-Doherty and Luke McConachy to speak to our VCAL cohort in VCAL ‘Step Up’ week.
Both guests are business owners, passionate about their industries and had relatable and interesting insights into transitioning from school to employment.
Hands On Learning
We warmly thank Roger Spooner, (Corio Tech) for coming back to speak to our students in their ‘Hands On Learning’ workshop. A small session, the students enjoyed hearing Roger’s path post-school.
IMPACT Dance Workshop.
We also thank Lochie Errad for running a dance workshop for the students in our IMPACT group. Since graduating Lochlan has enjoyed a successful career in the Art.
Looking forward to 2023
Now that we have established the Alumni program, it is great to use the momentum into next year.
We have events pencilled in for first term already, and can’t wait to keep bringing in relatable, and aspirational role models for our students.
There are lots of ways to support our Alumni program.
We are always looking for Alumni to add to our database, for relevant opportunities. If you know of anyone, please get in touch.
To follow the Alumni program, please join us on one of the below channels, and if you know of any Alumni who would like to join our database, we’d love to hear from them.
