Hollows
Congratulations to all Hollows Students on a fantastic finish to Term 2. It was a jam-packed term with many exciting events including both Year 7 and Year 8 Hollows students heading off to camp, Year 9 students participating in Heroes Day as well as our annual Hollows Fundraiser.
On behalf of all our Hollows Staff, I would like to wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday break – hoping everyone keeps nice and warm.
We look forward to seeing all students and staff back for another fantastic Term ahead!

Hollows House Fundraiser
Our annual Hollows Fundraiser was held on Friday 20th May. It was a very successful day all thanks to our amazing Hollows Student Leaders who planned and ran several fundraising events including free dress featuring a funky glasses competition to tie in our support of The Fred Hollows Foundation as well as our traditional BBQ with many Hollows Student Leaders assisting with the BBQ, collecting money and cleaning up after a very busy lunch selling 700 sausages.
A special thank you to Ms. Kaur, who supplied a Samosa and Chickpea Curry food choice for both our staff and student vegetarians.
Through the collective efforts of our Hollows Students and Staff, we were able to raise $3032 for the Fred Hollows Foundation. This money will be used in eye health programs to help restore sight to those who are needlessly blind, and help end avoidable blindness.
We are very proud of our connection to this amazing charity and the support that our school can provide.
Student Achievements in the Blackburn High School Community – Drew Aiono H16
Earlier this term, Proud Hollows Student, Drew Aiono, was selected to represent Victoria in the Australian National Gridiron Competition in Adelaide.
Drew made history by being the youngest to be selected in the Under 19's Juniors Team at just age 14!
Drew’s Victoria State Team defeated the South Australia Team 36 to 14. Drew has also recently helped his home team, The Croydon Rangers win the Under 16's Victorian Gridiron Championship. Well done Drew!
Year 7 Camp Kinglake
During Week 7, Year 7 Hollows Students travelled to Kinglake for their first camp with Blackburn High School. A big thank you to all the staff who accompanied our students and ensured they had a great time.
Read about some experiences below:
Year 7 Camp at Kinglake Forest Adventures was really fun!!! It was a good chance to spend time with friends and get to know other people better. It was really cold and wet but thankfully it didn’t snow but it felt like it could. That didn’t stop us from doing all the activities. We did lots of fun activities including the Leap of Faith and feeding the wallabies. We also did lots of wellbeing activities including some mindfulness, Journey Piece where we painted about our experience at camp and an activity called Forest Bathing.
Shinrin Yoku - Year 7 Hollows Student
My favourite activity would have probably been feeding the wallabies and the Leap of Faith. I really enjoyed seeing the wallabies and watching them learn to trust you. The Leap of Faith was fun too because we had to climb up a pole then jump off! We had to trust the people in our activity group to hold the rope tight to not let us fall. Camp was really fun, and I hope we can do it again! (Maybe without the rain)
Maddie Moore – Year 7 Hollows Leader
The camp was rather cold and muddy, but very fun. The highlight was probably the free-fall at the beginning of the tree climbing. You were harnessed to am auto-belaying machine (something that slows you down as you fall) then you just fell off. You free fall for a few seconds which is exciting then the auto-belayer catches you and then you “float” the rest of the way down. The homemade food was absolutely delicious, and they even have a piano (out of tune, but still fun to play). The best memory however was in the leap of faith. I was swinging like a pendulum and decided to hug one of the platform supports while I was still swinging. While I was doing the leap of faith, I was extremely nervous until I leapt off the platform. There I felt extremely excited. The well-being and meditation sessions were relaxing and took my mind off the stresses of the day.
