Student Leadership
Parliament Tour
On Tuesday 21 June, School Captains Jamie Ryan and Jeremy Chen attended a tour of Parliament House along with other school leaders from our region.
During the interactive experience we were provided with a detailed insight into the inner workings of Parliament House and the mechanisms that help to support our Westminster style democracy.
We were able to visit both the Legislative Assembly, or Lower House, and the Legislative Council, or Upper House. Our tour guide and member of the Legislative Council, Dr Matthew Bach, also presented a 3-minute piece during the night’s adjournment, which was quite exciting.
Along with the official tour we were provided with many personal anecdotes about the history of Parliament, including the sandstone building, the transition to technology and the incredible time pressure created when votes need to be cast.
Overall this tour was a very purposeful experience and certainly developed our understanding of the structures that work to support the strong democracy we celebrate in Australia.
