Music

Another term has been completed and another great period of work from our music community.

There have been myriad highlights, most notably the Mid-year Concert where we saw so many fantastic performances from across the Program.

Many other highlights have been less obvious. The beginning of ensembles such as Quattro strings, Junior Band and the Thursday Big Blow have begun the musical journeys of many of our students.

The growth of our student leadership and the cultural work that they have been developing will have impacts well into the future. With the students and teachers working together, they have developed a cultural ‘trademark’ and behaviours in line with the school norms, that we expect students in the Music Program to demonstrate.

Blackburn music is a passionate, creative, and persistent community dedicated to supporting each other to thrive. We achieve this through;

  • Having a growth mindset
  • Being punctual and prepared
  • Bringing positivity and enthusiasm to everything we do.
  • Co-operate and collaborate (lift up others)

Term 3 will see many performance opportunities. Below is an outline and specific details will be available through XUNO.

James Morrison Concert

We are very excited to be able to announce that over two days in August, we will be welcoming internationally acclaimed musician James Morrison to Blackburn. James and guest artists will be working with our students in preparation for a concert on Thursday, August 18 that promises to be an amazing event.

Stay tuned for further information about the day and ticketing for the concert!

Arts Excellence Assessments.

Thursday, July 14

Blackburn High has been selected to participate in the collection of assessment data for The Arts - Music to support Victoria’s Education State targets.

The Education State targets set out the Government’s commitment to more students reaching the highest levels of achievement in the Arts. This target highlights the importance of arts excellence and recognises that embedding a culture that values achievement in the Arts will help Victoria achieve its goals for better learning and life outcomes for all students.

A representative sample of students in Year 10 across Victoria has been invited to participate in the Arts assessments in 2022 across different Arts disciplines. The assessments will be very similar to the Midyear Milestones currently being undertaken.

Students who have been nominated to participate in this will be able to find further information in XUNO events.

NEVR Concert July 18

We are pleased to announce that the Clarinet Ensemble will be representing Blackburn at this year’s Spotlight Music Concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre. They will be performing amongst a program of performers from throughout the North-Eastern region We wish this group all the best as they prepare for this exciting event.

Essentially Ellington

EE returns to our shores after a break of 3 years, and we are looking forward to once again being able to perform. Three ensembles will perform at this event on Saturday, September 20 at Melbourne Polytechnic, Senior Jazz Orchestra, Intermediate Big Band and the Thursday Big Blow. Members of these bands will perform to and then work with renowned musicians Jerome Jennings and Vincent Gardner.

Wind Symphony Day at Melbourne University

The Symphonic Band will be presenting a concert at Melbourne University on Saturday, September 3 as part of a day with Eltham High School, Geelong College and the Melbourne University Music Program. This will be a great day of music making and having the opportunity to hear and play with other musicians.

South Street Eisteddfod

Sadly, Royal South Street has cancelled this year’s Strings and Bands section of the competitions. In place of this, we will be organising some events for those groups most effected by the change. More information about this will be available early in term 3.

Welcoming New Staff

During term 2, we welcomed new staff to the Music Team at Blackburn.

Ms Emily Kimpton has joined us as Flute specialist and will be teaching on Thursdays and Fridays.

Ms Dominique Mirabella will be teaching Double Reeds on Thursdays. We are very excited to have these additions to our team and what they will add to the program.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Mr Jarrad Linke and Brendan Toohey for the work they have done replacing Mr Ondaatje while he has been on leave.
