STEM & PE SPOTLIGHT

St Joseph's, 1922

Term 2, 2022

So far this term STEM and Physical Education and sport have been full of exciting experiences and interesting activities. The children in the Senior school participated in the Hooptime basketball competition at MSAC in Albert Park. The day proved to be not only very successful but also full of fun. One of our teams went all the way to the semifinals but unfortunately lost narrowly by two points and another one of our teams, fought for third place and played a draw in their deciding match.

This term the years three to six have been involved in a Taekwondo unit run by a very experienced Taekwondo teacher who runs his own martial arts school in Preston, George. George has taught taekwondo for nearly fifteen years and emphasized the importance of safety and self control. He also shared with the children some stories of how he got into martial arts at the tender age of five.

Above you can see Charlie, Max, Archer and Ben practicing their kicking skills using the correct stance and both their front and back feet to balance and kick. Below, Neve and Jacob are doing the same thing, but in their case, using the palms of both of their their hands.

In STEM the children in the Junior school and the Preps have been provided with opportunities to solve simple design and engineering challenges. Below you’ll see a photo of our Junior school’s Make a Tower with only 15 popsicle sticks and masking tape Challenge. There was great emphasis placed on teamwork and collaboration, solving problems (why is mine always falling ? How can I fix it ?) and persistence.

The children in the Middle and Senior school have been ‘tinkering’ using the Tinkercad website to create 3D designs. Below are some examples of the finished products (name tags abd keyrings), designed by the students and printed on our school’s 3D printer.
