Science Week

This week is National Science Week and to acknowlege this Peter Zammit, together with the classroom teachers, have prepared a day full of fun and interactive Science Experiences for our students.  Tomorrow, between 11:30am - 3:00pm the students will participate in rotational hands-on workshops.  Children will be in mixed age groups and will rotate through three activities including 'Dancing Sultanas' and 'Singing Toothpick' experiments.

I'd like to thank Peter for coordinating this event and I look forward to sharing photos in the next newsletter.

Child Safe Standards

On 1 July 2022, 11 new Victorian Child Safe Standards came into effect for schools.  To meet the new Child Safe Standards, we have built on our existing child safety strategies, policies and practices to strengthen our school’s culture of child safety and protect children and young people from abuse.

The 11 Child Safe Standards are listed on the 'Child Safe Standards' section of this newsletter.  This week I would like to take the opportunity to highlight how we at St Joseph's have promoted Child Safe Standard 3.

Standard 3 - Child and Student Empowerment

Children and young people are empowered about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously.

Student voice and agency are highly valued and a huge aspect of St Joseph's daily functioning.  We empower our students to voice their opinions and applaud those who take initiatives and speak-up.  Each year the students elect their class representatives for the Student Representative Coucil (SRC).  The SRC meets on a fortnightly basis with the Principal and works through many issues that may have been raised by their classmates.  The SRC also coordinate the school's Social Justice Initiatives and 'fun days', and they work with the school Social Club to coordinate special events.

Students are also provided the opportunity (and encouraged) to provide feedback on their learning.  This may be informally at the end of a lesson or at the end of an Inquiry Unit, or more formally through surveys and interviews with teachers and school leaders.
