The Short Listed Books are available for viewing in the library

or on the following website cbca.org.au

This year as part of Book Week Celebrations, we will have the following events…

Wednesday 22nd August

BOOK CHARACTER DRESS UP DAY

Staff and students come to school dressed up as a book character for a day.  Be creative and use your imagination and be someone or something else for the day!

WHOLE SCHOOL MULTIAGE WORKSHOP

Multiage workshop is a whole school event whereby students are split across various grades and participate in a literature based ‘fun’ activity with another staff member. It allows students to interact and engage with other students and teachers from other year levels within our school.

Year Two/Three “Hop On, Hop Off” Excursion

On Wednesday, the Year Two/Three students went on our “Hop On, Hop Off” excursion. This involved hopping on a bus at Moonee Ponds West and hopping off at Woodlands Historic Park in Greenvale to observe the natural bushland. After making scientific observations there, we hopped back on the bus to travel to Jawbone Marine Park in Williamstown to observe a contrasting ecosystem.

The purpose of our excursion was to investigate our Inquiry understandings which are; the similarities and differences of places (Climate, vegetation, features), Human activity and natural processes that impact on the Earth and the Interconnectedness between living things and the environment, and to excite the children to explore and develop their interest in this area of study.

I can’t tell you how proud I was of the students! They showed high levels of excitement and engagement as scientists observing plant life, animals (and evidence of their presence), signs of human impact, (both positive and negative), their curiosity, and their conversations with others about their observations.

As always, our children were excited about their learning, respectful of their peers, their teachers, the parents who supported us on the day (whose help we couldn’t have done without) and even the bus drivers who waited patiently for us to complete our research.

Congratulations to all involved!

To build on our experience, we invite any school community members who may have some expertise to help us learn more about plants, animals or the ways in which we can make a positive impact on our environment etc. to please chat to the teachers in the Year Two/Three team. (For example; gardeners, worm farm experts, bee keepers, environmentalists etc.)

Jenny Irvine (On behalf of the Two/Three Team)

When the Wipe Out Waste team did an audit in term one, we found that over half of the weight of our school waste from the yard was actually food scraps! We have figured out a way to solve our school’s problem…

Moonee Valley Council has given our school THREE GREEN BINS for our food waste!

Starting on this Monday on the 20th of August, each classroom will have its own pot to individually collect food waste in.

Each class will need to line the pot with newspaper prior to use in order to keep the pots and the classrooms clean.

They will need to be emptied every day in the green bins, which will be located next to the olive grove outside Room 7.

Here’s what you can and can’t put in the pots:

CAN’T

  • Liquids
  • Plastics
  • Any other type of rubbish that should end up in landfill

CAN

  • Bread
  • Rice
  • Pasta
  • Cereal
  • Food scrap (cooked and uncooked)
  • Fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Tea leaves, tea bags and coffee grounds

We can’t wait to have our yard free of food scraps and prevent food waste from being sent to landfill.

Jack's Paddock

Greetings families of MPW,

Earlier this year, with the support of the Environment sub-committee and with student input as to what students wanted, MPW applied for a grant to MAKE JACK’s PADDOCK GREAT AGAIN! We have been informed that our application for a grant has been successful but people in our community need to vote for it – as this is how the Pick My Project funding will operate. We need your help. The projects with the most votes will receive funding. We have applied for funding to bring play equipment into Jack’s Paddock which will benefit our community on weekends when the grounds are accessed.

Voting will open at 9am, Monday 13 August 2018 and close at 5pm, Monday 17 September.

In order to vote you will need to register for a Pick My Project account. The website is www.pickmyproject.vic.gov.au

Once you’ve registered, you can select your voting area by searching for the school’s street address (150 Athol st, Moonee Ponds) or locality, or dropping a pin on the map. You’ll be shown a minimum of 30 projects in your local community from which you’ll be able to vote for your three favourites.

Please vote for Make Jack's Paddock great again! And ask everyone you know to vote as well, the more votes, the more chance we truly have to Make Jack's Paddock great again!

Thank you

Alyena Mohummadally
