Grade 5 Home Learning Snapshot - Term 3/Week 6

Writing
Students will continue to focus on Organisation from the 6+1 Traits of Writing. This week they will focus on the structure and language features of a Biography and an Autobiography. They will use a graphic organiser to collect facts about a person of interest to them and write an information report. Students will practise ‘quick writes’ to improve their fluency, organisation and confidence in writing. Students will continue to link their writing to The Stages of Writing Process.
Reading
This week students will continue their focus on the comprehension strategy of summarising. They will learn the following strategies; ‘Name it, verb it, finish it’ and ‘Shrinking Notes’. These strategies will help them summarise and find the main idea of non- fiction texts. Students will be looking into what is ‘important’ versus ‘interesting’ when reading a text. They will continue to use a variety of texts and videos in reading that will help them inquire into the central idea ‘People stand up for rights to create change’.
Students need to continue reading daily as part of their tasks and also at night for their homework. If your child needs some inspiration for reading, here are some authors or books that might be of interest.
Students should also be encouraged to continue working on their fluency by reading out loud for part of their independent reading - whether they call a friend and read to them or read to family members or even pets!
Maths
Next week students will learn about how to find fractions of a number, while others will work with more complex percentage equations such as sales discounts and ‘best buys’. Students will have to apply this knowledge to problem solving tasks and real life scenarios. On Thursday, students will have their mid unit assessment for fractions and decimals.
Extension and Intervention Maths
Last week we began our extension maths program, which has been designed to support students who require an extra challenge in Mathematics. Each task will run for two weeks, giving students enough time to plan, investigate and report back their findings. One teacher will be available at least once a week to work with students to discuss any questions and work through areas of difficulty. This week the kids began designing a Pizza Party for all students and staff at BPS. This task will draw on their knowledge of fractions, percentages and financial plans.
This week we will also begin our Maths Intervention program every Friday to support students with their fraction understanding. These sessions will be on Google Meets at a time yet to be determined. Please contact your child’s class teacher for any further information regarding these programs.
Unit of Inquiry
This week in inquiry we will be completing our investigation into ‘Where We Are in Time and Place’ that students have been documenting on their Learning Journal Wall. Students having begun their research into some of the ‘Movers and Shakers’ of Australian history and social change. After having broadly researched a number of individuals who have played a key role in our history with a particular focus on the interplay between perspective and motivation, students will choose a historical or current Australian figure to focus on. They will need to complete an in-depth study of their chosen Australian Mover and Shaker and present their research in a format of their choosing. Possible ways students may choose to present their research include an information report, a biography, an iMovie, a mock interview, Slides or a podcast just to mention a few.
Word Study
This week students will continue to "bootcamp" Rule 30. This is where the students practise the new skill until it becomes "automatic" in their brains.
During the bootcamp students will need to not only spell the word but they will need to explain their thinking as well. Underneath each spelling word, students need to write the reason they chose the code ‘ar’ or ‘a’- 3rd sound. The reasons for their choice should be linked to Rule 30.
Students will continue to practise 30 "codes" of the English language through watching videos.
Wellbeing
The ability to self-regulate is a skill which is important to all of us especially in our current situation. We all come across situations that test us from time to time. When we are able to recognise our feelings we are able to do something about them and get ourselves to a healthy place. An important area of emphasis this week will be decatastrophising as students ask themselves, “How BIG is my problem?”.
