Grade 5 Home Learning Snapshot - Term 3/Week 3

Writing

Students will continue to elaborate on their ‘Ideas’ from the 6+1 Traits of Writing and identify the stage they are working on through the Writing Process. They will use an image to look more closely at how to add important details to their own ideas at that initial stage of their writing. A scoring guide will be introduced to students so they can recognise where they are in relation to developing their ideas and reflect on where they need to be. Students will find SEEDS to use for inspiration in their writing and the creation of their ideas. They will practise ‘Show me, don’t just tell me’ to give specific details in their writing by using ‘showing’ statements, not just ‘telling’ statements. Different graphic organisers will be used to organise their ideas in preparation for writing.

Reading

Students need to continue reading daily as part of their tasks and also at night for their homework. If your child needs some inspiration for reading, here are some authors or books that might be of interest.

This week students will continue to focus on their fluency when reading out loud. This involves many dimensions that can help students to gather a deeper understanding of what they are reading. The elements that will be a focus this week are; intonation, expression,  and phrasing. Students will learn to make sure their voice matches the meaning in a text and will work on using voices for different characters in fiction texts. During the Reading Google Meet mini lesson students will continue working on their reading goal with their teacher. They will reflect on how their fluency has improved by practising reading aloud. Students will need to continue to practise reading out loud during this week - whether they call a friend and read to them or read to family members or even pets!

Maths

This week in Maths, students will learn to order, compare and represent different types of fractions and they will use their fraction walls from last week to help with this. In our Maths Mini Lesson on Tuesday,  students will learn the strategies involved when working with equivalent fractions. Throughout the week students will continue to develop their understanding of the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages.

Inquiry

In our UOI, students will be using either a wall, a table or some other space where they can build their inquiry  learning journey. They will begin their  inquiry unit with a brainstorm around the Central idea: ‘People stand up for the right to create change’. This will form the nuclei of their learning about the importance of time and place. In order to get familiar with different perspectives about place students will create, compare and analyse different types of maps representing Australia.

Word Study

Students will continue to practise 30 "codes" of the English language through watching videos uploaded by their class teacher. They will also continue to explore a reading or spelling rule which will help them when they decode or write words. There are 30 rules that students will gradually explore through their primary schooling.  This week students will continue to  "bootcamp" Rule 7. This is where the students practice the new skill until it becomes "automatic" in their brains.

Wellbeing

The ability to self-regulate is a skill which is important to all of us especially in our current situation. We all come across situations that test us from time to time. When we are able to recognise our feelings we are able to do something about them and get ourselves to a healthy place. An important area of emphasis this week will be on triggers and how to recognise them as well as strategies for dealing with them.
