PRAYER
Next Sunday marks the end of the Season of Easter, with the celebration of Pentecost. For religious scholars Pentecost is seen as the birth of the church. The story of Pentecost occurs after Jesus ascended to Heaven. The Apostles were very frightened and unsure what would happen to them now Jesus was gone. The story of the coming of the Holy Spirit to Mary and the Apostles is told in Acts of the Apostles (2:1-4). Take some time to read and listen to this short account of Pentecost while looking at the artwork of Juan Bautista Maino, a Spanish painter who in 1613 became a member of the Dominican Order while working on this painting.
The Coming of the Holy Spirit
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
