Pathways News
Term two is a busy time for careers with events taking place across all year groups.
Year 7 and 8 had their first guest speaker, engineer Kane Williams. Kane was able to speak to students about his experience at secondary school, his pathway into engineering and the work he carries out day to day, including the pipeline being built between Tasmania and Victoria. He was also able to speak to students about the growing population of Craigieburn and subsequent impact on transport, roads and housing. It was a really inspiring presentation which students enjoyed as it allowed them to see that any career pathway is never simple.
Year 9 had the opportunity to complete their Morrisby profiling and meet with a career counsellor for a one-to-one appointment to discuss subject selection, pathways and career opportunities. Students found these 30-minute interviews valuable and for many it was the first time they were able to consider their next steps after secondary school.
Year 9 also had a career presentation from Victoria Police. They were given insight into entry to the police force, training and day-to-day work that the police carry out. It also opened students up to the various pathways in the police force.
Year 10 have been preparing for work experience, which will now commence from the week beginning 27th November. Students are seeking their own place of work and can be supported by the Pathways team.
Year 11 have been continuing their one-to-one career meetings with career advisors as they begin to look at opportunities for their next step, be it apprenticeship and training or further study at TAFE and University. A presentation from Sarina Russo Apprenticeships supported this work and it was engaging for all students to understand the world of work.
All students can book an appointment at www.craigieburnsccareers.com . This website has a wealth of information on jobs, careers and finance matters.
La Trobe university presented to Year 12 and met with Year 11 and 12 students at lunchtime to look at courses available at La Trobe and the Aspire Early Entry Program.
In the last week of term two, Year 9 and 10 will be completing taster sessions to support them in their subject selection for 2024. This will be followed up with Discovery Day events in the third week of term three to assist students with their decisions. More information will follow.
As always there are many individual achievements to celebrate, from students who have secured apprenticeships as a baker, mechanic, beautician and carpenter. Along with students who have secured casual work in the local community and a few entrepreneurs who are setting up their own business.
