Environmental Science

Dear CSC Families, Students and School Community,

On behalf of the Year 9 Environmental Science class for 2023, Mr. Wu and Ms. Bailey would like to acknowledge and honour the achievements of students with their semester 2 projects.

I write this in reference to the experience starting from the end of Term 1, where the Parent Teacher Interview Science Exhibition sparked an idea to celebrate and develop student successes in Environmental Science. At the end of Term 1, the students had completed poster projects on global warming to raise awareness about the impacts of greenhouse gases, especially on the earth spheres including the influence on the carbon and nitrogen cycles.

Following the work on global warming, carbon and nitrogen cycles during Term 2, the Environmental Science topic then changed to carbon footprints and impacts of having a large carbon footprint. This led to the task of researching through videos, interactives, or documentaries of life cycle analysis - in particular on simple everyday items we used, be it a pencil, a takeaway container or even our favourite outfit, all of which have a carbon footprint, particularly if you include the resources required to produce them.

Students were invited to study and review their own household carbon footprints via interactives such as Carbon Footprint Network or Carbon Positive Australia and also gain an understanding of the importance of biocapacity as a part of a broader understanding of global sustainability and chemical cycles which sustain and support life on planet Earth.

From even a project used by Mr. Wu in his university days, the students proceeded to understand the process of flowcharts, together with how raw materials are just as vital in each stage prior to the final manufacturing process, but also the disposal process and methods on how to control the waste input.

In particular, it was amazing to see the work that was put into the life cycle analysis posters from our group of students. Special mention in particular to Baker Jadoi, John Tupou, Mahir Yusuf, Saumya Gajjar, Rand Alrabian, Mirna Moses.

Likewise, we also pay our respects and acknowledge the cooperation of all our students in the time they have taken to create projects which contribute to the success of the Environmental Science program. We hope for greater success with another group of students in 2024!!! 🙂

Here is to the rest of semester and year of 2023!

Mr. Justin Wu and Ms. Bailey.
