Year 5/6 News

Urban Camp

What a wonderful time the Year 5/6 students spent exploring Melbourne. The Urban Camp certainly lived up to our expectations with students problem-solving, exploring new places and navigating the city's public transport and key locations.

It was wonderful to see the students engaged in the different activities, from visiting the State Library, Entreprize Park, the Treasury Building, Old Melbourne Gaol, Metro Tunnel Headquarters, ArtVO, the MCG, the movies, ten pin bowling to the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Queen Victoria Market.

We received multiple commendations from venues regarding the behaviour, enthusiasm and interests of our students.

By the end of the camp experience, students were confidently navigating public transport, ensuring safety and effective reading of timetables and maps!

Back at school this week, students reflected on their camp experience in Writing, creating a piece of choice to engage their reader. Please find some camp-inspired writing below:

State Library by Odessa- "Did you know that the State Library has over 2 million books? Well, that makes sense due to how big it is. When I went to the State Library, I liked how it not only had books but also places to study and different rooms reflecting Victoria's history."

MCG inspired story by Mattia - "Boom! The sirens go off and the crowd is going wild! To think that 12 years ago I was here with my school and now I am on the pitch playing in one of the biggest games of the season. I heard the crowd cheering my name as I was about to shoot the winning shot. It sounded like a stampede. It was hard to concentrate but I slowly got there. It went silent as I took the shot. I hit the ball as hard as I could. I couldn't watch. Suddenly, I heard the roar of the crowd!"

Camp Movies by Odessa - "I walked into the movies and sat down in my seat. The lights dimmed and the movie started. We were so excited to watch the new Sonic, the Hedgehog movie. At funny and good parts of the movie, everyone was cheering and laughing. It was a good movie. We could taste the crunch of the salt in our mouth."

To continue our learning about Australia's political system, the Year 5/6 students will visit Parliament House this week across two different excursions. Please check Operoo to ensure the permission note has been signed and for timings.
