1st of September is Wattle Day
As blossom appears for the first signs of spring, it’s a time to celebrate our national floral emblem, Wattle. There are numerous varieties of wattle and during Tree Planting Day we planted a few trees in the front of our school.
This week, we talked about the importance of flowers to attract bees to help pollinate plants. Students viewed an episode of Behind the News called Space Seeds. In 2021, Some Australian schools conducted experiments with local wattle seeds and wattle seeds that had been sent into space for 6 months to compare any differences in growth.
One of this year’s shortlisted books is about the importance of bees. Just One Bee by Margrete Lamond looks at the important work bees do for the planet. With pollution, pesticides, fewer flowers and more land cleared, bees are under pressure and have a harder time to survive. Through the determination and effort of just one bee, a waste land is returned to a field of flowers. Bees play a major role in the pollination of plants and the fruit and vegetables we eat. Growing more flowers helps bees to thrive.
Students enjoyed making special Father’s Day seed cards to take home. These can go straight into the ground and if kept moist will grow into tomato seedlings and mature plants ready for summer.
