Australian School Library Day will be celebrated on the 23rd of August 2023, which is the Wednesday of the Children's Book Council of Australia 2023 Children's Book Week.
The purpose of Australian School Library Day is to celebrate and highlight the glorious variety of things that your school library staff do - especially those things that may normally be ‘hidden’ from view but are so essential to the far-reaching web of impact that the school library has in your school.
Sandringham College Library is an invaluable resource for students and a great place for students to explore their interests. Library staff work hard to provide students with the resources they need to further their education and knowledge. They offer a wide variety of books, journals, magazines, and other materials to help students learn and grow. Library staff also provide guidance and assistance to help students find the right materials for their research and projects. They also work to create a comfortable and welcoming environment for students to enjoy reading, studying, and exploring. Library staff also plan and host events to enrich the learning experience for students such as, book clubs, and other interactive activities. Library staff are always available to help and ensure that the library remains an exciting and stimulating place to learn.
What's happening in the Sandringham College Library...
In July Jeremy De Korte (Teacher/Librarian) hosted two classes of senior students in the Holloway Road Library.
During the morning session the library was visited by the Year 11 VCAL class and their teacher Maria Curphey to take part in a history walk of the school. At the Holloway Road Campus, we are lucky that the school buildings are a timeline of educational needs. The walk started off in the local neighbourhood to examine housing needs and urban development, then proceeded to walk around the school grounds, following a route that went past each building in the order of construction. At each 'stop' the history and purpose of each building was explained, the class marked the construction timelines on their map.
The Holloway Road Library was then visited in the afternoon by the VCE Media Class for a session that reinforced the research process, academic referencing, and how to avoid plagiarism. The class was provided with a PowerPoint which went through each aspect, students then undertook a practical exercise in using the referencing generator the library subscribes to accessed via the Sandringham College Library Website. In the coming weeks Year 11 VCAL will also benefit from this workshop.
Bluff Road Library recently hosted a Chess tournament for students from Years 7-9. 16 students competed in a round robin style tournament, making for some very intense matches as they vied to finish at the top of their tables. After some exciting games, the grand final was played out between Ezra (Year 7) and Vishnu (Year 8). In the end, Vishnu emerged victorious, and was crowned the overall winner of the tournament.
