The Big Issue Excursion
The Big Issue Workshop and City Search activities have engaged students in creating awareness and empathy towards the issues of homelessness and disadvantage in their communities.
The benefits of taking part in an excursion to explore the issues surrounding the homelessness include;
Hands-on learning: This activity allows students to step out of the classroom and into the real world, experiencing firsthand the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness. It provides a practical understanding that goes beyond theoretical knowledge.
Problem-solving skills: The challenge aspect of the activity encourages students to work collaboratively in groups, promoting critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. They will need to strategize and communicate effectively to succeed in their mission of finding locations and services in the city that can support homelessness.
Awareness of social issues: By exploring topics related to homelessness, such as access to transportation, services, healthcare, and income, students become more conscious of the challenges that vulnerable populations face daily. This experience can foster empathy and a desire to contribute to solutions.
In the workshop students heard first-hand from people who have experienced homelessness or disadvantage, helping to break down stereotypes surrounding hardship in our communities, careers, and interactions with others. This workshop also helped the students better understand the unique role of social enterprise in addressing some of Australia’s most critical social issues.
