VISUAL ARTS NEWSLETTER - TERM 1, 2019

It has been an exciting start to the year in the art room. Learning procedures and getting to know you activities took place, as the Foundation students entered the space for the first time.

The theme for art this year is Between 2 Worlds: Reality v’s Illusion. Students have been learning about M C Escher, (a Dutch artist) whose works have been on exhibition at the NGV - National Gallery of Victoria.

Escher’s works have been part of the art program and will continue to do so throughout the year. He incorporated maths into his art works. The focus for this term was tessellations.

The junior school used coloured paper to create simplified tessellations by using squares through pattern work, as well as paper weaving. The middle school focused on using 2D shapes to create a tessellation pattern. The senior school watched footage on how to make a tessellation template in order to create their pattern, inspired by Escher’s works.

Both middle school and senior school students completed drafts in their sketch books using grey lead pencils.

Once the draft was complete, students worked on their good copy. Black fine-liners/chunky black textas were then used to trace over the pencil outline. Many students began painting their pieces using pigmented ink.

Years 4-6 students attended the NGV on Wednesday the 27th of March. They viewed Escher’s art works first hand. Nendo (Japanese design studio) incorporated Escher’s work skilfully to highlight his ideas and styles by adding another dimension to the exhibition. Students always had the opportunity to visit some free exhibitions within the art gallery.

Harmony Day is celebrated on the 21st of March each year. Junior and Middle School students had their art session on the day and worked on a collaborative piece using orange, red and yellow paint.

All students have been encouraged to extend their knowledge of the Fitzroy Primary School Expectations Matrix and apply this in the art room. It involves being respectful, displaying courage and showing empathy. Safety is equally important, particularly while working in the art room.

Hi-five cards & the Marble Jar Reward system are used in the art room. The winners of the marble jar reward system for Term 1 is 2/3G. Congratulations for a fine effort. Well done to all classes.
