The Principles of Child Safe Standards

The Child Safe Standards are underpinned by the understanding that all children are vulnerable. However, three overarching principles require organisations to consider the increased vulnerability of:

  • Aboriginal children
  • those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • children with disabilities.

These groups of children and young people may be particularly vulnerable to being victimised and may face challenges in reporting an incident of abuse.

At Naranga we create an environment that reaches our Aboriginal students by providing staff with current and credible information for education. We fly the aboriginal flag, include accurate truth telling in our Australian history program and embrace aboriginal art and language in performing arts. We are also attending a whole staff cultural awareness training called CUST on the next curriculum day.

We pride ourselves on giving voice to students with disabilities. We do this by improving emotional literacy, adhering to the Respectful Relationships curriculum and improving communication skills with our students. We are mindful at all times of improving the independence of our students creating less dependence on caregivers to provide basic hygiene and daily living needs.

These strategies are all embedded in our school culture. We are currently reviewing our Code of Conduct at Naranga School and further embedding Child Safe Standards into the whole school expectations.

To have your say on how we should conduct ourselves with respect to the protection of our students please email or call the school with the subject line Code of Conduct - Parent or carer feedback.
