From the Principal

Welcome to the new term

The school holidays were a busy period for 47 Year 11 students as they completed their pilgrimage experience to Timor-Leste, Cambodia, Northern Territory and India. This week they have also undertaken an important Retreat to reflect and share insights on their pilgrimage. The student engagement in the whole process was superb and was complemented by the expertise and commitment of our Director of Faith and Mission, Ms Janeen Murphy, and other staff.

Our Year 12 students were engaged in examinations and assessments during the holiday period. We wish them well as they complete their final term at the College with the combination of Graduation ceremonies and examinations. They have been an exceptional senior group of students and we look forward to the upcoming valedictory.

This week we have also undertaken the first of many celebratory events with a Sports Awards’ evening and a Media Night. There was an excellent diversity of student performances and recognition of achievement.

My brief introduction at the Sports’ evening emphasised the wonderful mental and physical health benefits of sport participation. I am thrilled that so many of our students take advantage of the opportunities afforded at the College and beyond. On the night we showed a short video of some of our current students who have achieved recognition at state and national levels this year. It is also worth noting that former student, Matt de Boer played for GWS in this year’s AFL grand final.

Most people do not get the opportunity to play sport at the highest level. However, it is amazing how often sport can transcend language and culture. Being part of the Pilgrimage Program was very special for all participants this year including the College Principal. Travelling on an overnight train between Kolkata to Ranchi was made a little more comfortable through conversations with the locals about test cricket and the Indian Premier League! Congratulations to all our students recognised at events this week.
