This semester our focus in HASS is on locations and places.  We are also learning about the Government and Colonisation.  

Geography: Human and environmental influence on place

Learning Intentions 

Students will:

  • understand what geography is and how to think and act geographically
  • understand the geographical concepts of place and space having human and environmental characteristics
  • know why Aboriginal Country is important describe locations of local, national and global place using
  • large and small-scale maps and cartographic conventions explain geographical characteristics of different locations from local to national scale
  • understand how environmental characteristics influence human impact on place
  • understand how human characteristics influence the environmental characteristics of place
  • understand how sustainable ways of living and methods of environmental management can influence human characteristics of place in Australia
  • know about the effects of bushfires and floods as a geographical challenge
  • conduct an inquiry into a geographical challenge, identifying an action plan and its possible effects.

Civics and Citizenship: Government elections in our Australian democracy

Learning Intentions 

Students will:

  • understand what ‘civics and citizenship’ is and why it is important
  • participate as people working together in their community as local and global citizens to solve problems and support causes
  • understand what government and democracy are, and the values which underpin Australia’s democracy
  • understand why we have laws and regulations
  • know the roles and responsibilities of key people working in Australia’s law enforcement and legal systems
  • understand the key features of the Australian electoral process and why elections are important in a democracy
  • know the roles and responsibilities of Australian electors and candidates participate in an election process as teams to achieve shared Goals.

History: Impact of Colonisation in Australia 

Learning Intentions 

Students will:

  • understand that history is a collection of people’s stories which are told from a point of view and know that it is important to study history from multiple perspectives in order to develop a whole picture
  • understand how to think and act like historians by asking and answering questions using provocations and prior knowledge
  • identify and examine the economic, social and political reasons for establishing colonies in Australia
  • analyse the effects of the establishment of colonial settlements in Sydney Cove and Van Diemen’s Land on the lives of European settlers and convicts
  • analyse the effects of the establishment of colonial settlements in Sydney Cove and Van Diemen’s Land on the lives of Aboriginal peoples
  • evaluate the link between early colonisation and the dispossession of Aboriginal people, and the campaign of Aboriginal peoples for land rights
  • understand how the environment changed as a result of the establishment of British settlements in Sydney Cove and Van Diemen’s Land.
