Head lice
Head Lice in the schoolThere has been a reported case of head lice in the school. Anyone can get head lice, and given the chance, head lice move from head to head without discrimination. People get head lice from direct hair to hair contact with another person who has head lice. The head lice do not jump or fly, they can only crawl.
Please check your child's hair carefully as it is quite possible that he/she could have been infected. If you do detect head lice you will need to treat your child's hair before they can return to school.
Preventing Head Lice:
If parents are diligent in checking their children's hair it will help to control the spread of head lice in the community.
There is no proven product that prevents head lice.
Using the conditioner and comb method once a week will help you detect any had lice early and minimise the problem. Tying long hair back can also help prevent the spread of head lice.
Treating Head Lice:
1. Obtain treatment lotions from the chemist. Follow the product instructions carefully.
2. Concentrate on the head-there is no evidence to suggest that you need to do any extra cleaning of the house or classroom.
3. No treatment kills all the eggs so treatment must involve two applications seven days apart.
4. If you are using lotions apply the product to dry hair unless otherwise stated on the product.
5. Combs with long, rounded stainless steel teeth positioned close together (available from chemists) have been shown to be the most effective way to remove the lice and eggs.
