Sandringham College Libraries is an inclusive and safe space.
We stand with the LGBTQIA+ Community
A school library should be at the forefront of thinking about and acting to promote inclusion and equity of access and opportunity. Our role as collection developers is powerful, a school library collection should reflect the diversity of the student population. The safe physical environment created by library staff should flow through to students feeling safe in their book choices and their exploring minds.
The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) states school libraries should be a ‘safe space where individual curiosity, creativity, and an orientation toward learning are encouraged and supported and where students can explore diverse topics, even controversial topics, in privacy and safety.’ (IFLA, 2015) It is for this reason that this library is developing a collection and promoting inclusive stories that our students see themselves in.
Our collection includes a great deal of LGBTQIA+ both fiction and non-fiction, we also have a dedicated page on our website listing these books. These books can be identified by a rainbow sticker on the inside back cover.

Recently, a Melbourne University Librarian identified the skills most 1st-year students lacked as being how to reference properly and how to successfully use databases and search catalogues.
We in the library are here to help our students get a head start over students from other schools and give them the skill set to effectively use databases, search a catalogue, and confidently reference sources.
Jeremy De Korte (Holloway Road Library's teacher-librarian) will be giving tutorials to make further studies just a little bit easier.
Students can register for these tutorials via the Sandringham College Website.

To make life easier for students, the Library has recently subscribed to an online referencing generator. Students will be able to refer to this resource to assist with their referencing. Sandringham College uses the APA 7th referencing style.
The online reference generator can be found on the Library website under
