Reflection

Today we remember Blessed Edmund Rice who was born in Ireland in 1762. He inherited his uncle's business and became wealthy, but his wife died in an accident, leaving him to care for his disabled daughter.

At the age of 40, he sold his business and put the money into schools for poor boys. He founded the congregation of the Christian Brothers. Many boys in Australia and New Zealand have been educated by them.

This coming Sunday is Mother's Day. Easter is a good time for Mother's Day because mothers are people who give life. They try to see that their children are fed, healed, comforted and protected. We give thanks for our mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, godmothers, aunts and anyone who is like a mother to us.

Prayer

Gracious God,

through the announcement of the holy women,

you bring the good news of your love to people everywhere.

Strengthen us to carry that good news

in our lives, in our hearts and in our words.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen
