Amnesty International event 

This year the English College in Prague saw the resurgence of one of its most impactful and important extra-curricular activities, the Amnesty International Society. Led in the past by Mr. Colin Beet, this year several Year 6 students teamed up with Mrs. Chantelle Buchanan to bring back this society and organise educational and fundraising events in the name of Amnesty International as well as promoting its goals of international acceptance. This theme of internationalism coincides very nicely with this year’s theme of “the World” and showed just how diverse the ECP community really is.

On 21 November, the society organised the “Human Library” event where four speakers from different socio-economic backgrounds talked about their experiences as members of the LGBTQ+ community in the Czech Republic and abroad and their lives so far and gave an incredible insight into what it means to be gay, lesbian, transgender or asexual today. The event took place in the Annex building of the school and concluded with the participating students writing several short letters to the speakers themselves, in which they wrote about what emotions the event created within them but also about anything personal they themselves wanted to tell the speakers.

The Society followed up this successful event with another one on 14 December, when it organised a letter-signing for two political prisoners, Mr. Mahadine in Chad, who was sentenced for threatening the security of his country after he exposed its corrupt nature on social media, and Mr. Clovis Razafimalala of Madagascar, who is sentenced to five years in prison if he ever again protests against illegal rain forest deforestation as he has done in the past. Over 150 letters were signed in total with several students and teachers taking their time to write a much more personal letter to the prisoners themselves, encouraging them in their fight and wishing them good luck in their struggle for freedom and against lies and corruption. The event ran throughout the whole day with several students selling baked goods to pay for the numerous stamps needed while others were leading the letter-writing in the refectory.

Akce Amnesty International

Tento rok na Anglickém gymnáziu došlo ke znovuzrození jednoho z  nejdůležitějších klubů školy, Amnesty International Society. V minulosti byl tento klub veden panem Colinem Beetem a letos se několik studentů rozhodlo tento klub společně s paní Buchanan a panem Hudsonem obnovit a zorganizovat vzdělávací a petiční akce, které mají za cíl podpořit mezinárodní hodnoty Amnesty International. Tato mezinárodní tématika velice hezky zapadá do letošního školního tématu roku „Svět“ a dokazuje, jak různorodá komunita ECP je.

21. listopadu byla zorganizovaná akce nazvaná „Human Library“ kde čtyři hosté z různých prostředí hobořili o svých zkušenostech jakožto členů LGBTQ+ komunity zde v České republice, ale i v zahraničí. Mluvili o svých životech a o tom, jaké to je být v dnešní době homosexuál, transgender nebo asexuální. Akce se konala v Annexu školy a byla zakončena psaním krátkých dopisů adresovaných těmto hostům. Studenti v dopisech psali o svých emocích z celého večer, co je oslovilo nebo ovlivnilo, a také o osobních věcech, o které se chtěli s hosty podělit.

Po této úspěšné akci následovala 14. prosince další událost. Klub AI zorganizoval petiční psaní dopisů pro dva politické vězně, pana Mahadina z Čadu, který byl odsouzen za ohrožení státu, když ho kritizoval na sociálních sítích za korupci, a pana Clovise Razafimalalu z Madagaskaru, který má pětiletý podmínečný trest kvůli tomu, že demonstroval proti ilegálnímu kácení deštných pralesů.

Celkově bylo podepsáno nebo sepsáno přes 150 dopisů, přičemž několik studentů a učitelů si našlo čas a napsalo osobní dopisy těmto vězňům, ve kterých je podpořili v jejich bitvě a popřáli jim hodně štěstí v jejich boji za svobodu a proti lžím a korupci. Akce probíhala celý den; několik studentů také prodávalo domácí dobroty, jejichž výtěžek půjde na financování poštovních známek a obálek pro všechny dopisy, zatímco ostatní pomáhali s podepisováním dopisů v jídelně.

Jménem klubu ECP Amnesty International bychom rádi poděkovali všem, kteří podepsali petiční dopisy nebo napsali své vlastní, i těm, kteří nás jakkoliv podpořili během těchto dvou úžasných akcí. Doufáme, že v novém kalendářním roce Vám nabídneme další podobné akce.
