The Duke of Edinburgh's International Awards

Congratulations to the 21 ECP students who received their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh's International Awards at the Czech Museum of Music!

Blahopřejeme 21 studentům ECP, kteří v Českém muzeu hudby  obdrželi bronzová a stříbrná ocenění v rámci programu Mezinárodní ceny vévody z Edinburghu!

MUN - Model United Nations

On 2nd and 3rd December, representatives of English College travelled to the Prague British School to participate in something known as MUN  or Model United Nations. It is a simulation of events and procedures that take place during real UN sessions. Each student prior to attending the event was assigned a country and committee; I myself was assigned to the delegation of the United States on the UN Security Council. Other students either discussed the issues of displaced minorities in Myanmar or responded to the critical environmental calamities of the recent hurricanes and storms in the Caribbean and US. The aim of the simulation is for students to engage with other students by discussing and debating, which is done in either a moderated or unmoderated caucus, which would ultimately change the language used in discussion. An essential part is preparing position papers where they have information containing their country's stance on the particular issue and, as a result, the student then aims to negotiate with other countries about how the issue is to be solved. In my case the topic was the nuclear crisis in North Korea. Negotiations require reason, persuasion, and sometimes sheer cunning. Many of our students from the College were new to MUN but nevertheless, I myself was quite impressed with their performance despite feeling such pressure and nervousness. On top of that, another student who was new to MUN was tasked with chairing her assigned conference and despite taking on such a difficult role, she performed almost without fault. Our MUN coordinator, Dr. Young, organised this event for us for which we are all most grateful as we inevitably developed skills we would acquire in situations only like these. I have had the opportunity to meet students of different backgrounds and not only combine brains and everything relating to academia but also to make new friends. For the future, our MUN group is looking into countries in Europe and possibly the world to attend more diverse and intense conferences.

MUN - Modelování jednání OSN

Ve dnech 2. a 3. prosince navštívili zástupci Anglického gymnázia Prague British School, aby se zapojili do akce MUN (modelování Organizace spojených národů). Jedná se o simulaci událostí a postupů, které se uskutečňují během skutečných zasedání OSN. Každému studentovi je před účastí přidělena země a výbor. Sám jsem byl pověřen delegací Spojených států v Radě bezpečnosti OSN. Ostatní studenti diskutovali o problémech vysídlených menšin v Myanmaru nebo o reakci na vážné ekologické katastrofy, které se týkaly nedávných hurikánů a bouří v Karibiku a USA. Cílem simulace je, aby se studenti zapojili do spolupráce s dalšími studenty a diskutovali s nimi, a to buď v moderovaném, nebo nemoderovaném klubu, což ovlivňuje jazyk používaný v diskusi. Důležitou součástí je příprava písemného vyjádření shrnující postoj dané země vůči dané problematice, na základě něhož se studenti snaží s ostatními zeměmi vyjednávat o tom, jak má být daná otázka vyřešena. V mém případě byla tématem jaderná krize v Severní Koreji. Vyjednávání vyžadují zdůvodňování, přesvědčování a někdy i mazanost. Pro mnohé z našich studentů bylo zapojení do akce MUN novou zkušeností, ale bez ohledu na to jsem byl  ohromen jejich výkony, přestože jsem cítil tlak a nervozitu. Kromě toho byla naše studentka, pro níž jsou akce MUN nové, pověřena předsednictvím jedné z konferencí a navzdory tak obtížné roli to zvládla téměř bez chybičky. Jsme velmi vděčni našemu koordinátorovi kroužku MUN, Dr. Youngovi, který tuto akci pro nás zajistil, protože jsme mohli rozvíjet své dovednosti, které bychom jinak mohli těžko získat. Měl jsem příležitost setkat se se studenty různého původu a nejen kombinovat různé nápady na akademické  úrovni, ale také získat nové přátele. Do budoucna by se naše skupina MUN ráda zúčastnila rozmanitých a intenzivních konferencí v některé z evropských zemí nebo možná i dále.

Reading Havel

ECP Czech department joined the reading campaign of Václav Havel Library Reading Havel. Amalia Vystavělová, Y5 received an Honorary Mention for her essay, Václav Havel.​ 

In 2017, the Václav Havel Library received 65 student essays from 33 schools and 10 regions of the Czech Republic. The theme of the 9th year was "Is the one who has the most likes right?" In their essays, students were thinking about the influence of social media, the notion

of truth and the growing populism in public spaces.​

Číst Havla

Oddělení českého jazyka na Anglickém gymnáziu se připojilo k akci Knihovny Václava Havla "Číst Havla". Amálie Vystavělová z 5. ročníku získala za svou esej o Václavu Havlovi čestné uznání. V roce 2017 obdržela Knihovna Václava Havla celkem 65 studentských esejí ze 33 škol a 10 krajů České republiky. Tématem 9. ročníku bylo „Má pravdu ten, kdo má nejvíce lajků?“. Studenti se ve svých esejích zamýšleli nad vlivem sociálních sítí, pojmem pravdy i nad rostoucím populismem veřejnosti. 

ECP teacher gives lecture at the Sorbonne

At a conference organised by the Malesherbes University Centre at the Sorbonne in  Paris, in cooperation with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in France, Dr Josef Švéda gave a lecture on “The Mašín Brothers as Popcultural Icons of Czech Communism and Capitalism”.

Učitel ECP přednášel v Paříži na Sorboně

Dr. Josef Švéda měl na Sorboně v Paříži přednášku na téma „Bratři Mašínové jako popkulturní ikony  komunismu a kapitalismu v Čechách“ v rámci konference organizované Univerzitní centrum Malesherbes ve spolupráci s Velvyslanectvím České republiky ve Francii. 

Selected for the Czech National Dressage Team

The selections took place in Kralovicky Dvur. On the first day we rode our test and the dressage committee, together with Dr Schüle, a German Olympic dressage judge, assessed us. The next day we had a training session with Dr Schüle where we focused on what we didn’t do so well in the test - this was also to see how it was to work with us and our horses. In the evening they told us who had been picked for the A team. I managed to get picked with my mare, Fiorella STR.  On the third day the A team again trained with Dr Schüle. He gave us lots of things to work on until the next meet, which will be in February.

Výběr pro český národní jezdecký tým

Výběr se uskutečnil v Královickém Dvoře. První den jsme absolvovali náš test a posuzoval nás drezurní výbor, včetně Dr. Schüleho, německého olympijského rozhodčího drezury. Následující den jsme absolvovali školení s  Dr. Schülem, kde jsme se soustředili na to, co jsme v testu mohli udělat lépe. Součástí bylo i lépe poznat, jaké to je pracovat s námi a s našimi koňmi. Večer nám oznámili, kdo byl vybrán pro tým A. Podařilo se mi do tohoto výběru dostat s mojí kobylou Fiorellou STR. Třetí den měl tým A opět tréninky s Dr. Schülem. Dal nám spoustu úkolů, na kterých budeme pracovat do příští schůzky, která se bude konat v únoru.
