Week 3 Home learning Snapshot Grade One

Welcome to Week 3 of Home Learning
Congratulations on another week of home learning. The Grade 1 team of teachers are delighted to see their students faces on Google Meet and their wonderful work presented is such a variety of ways through Seesaw. We appreciate your commitment and the effort you have put in to home learning and we acknowledge the challenges you may be encountering this term.
GOOGLE MEETS
We are absolutely loving seeing students on our daily Google Meets meetings and we know how much joy they also get in seeing and interacting with each other during this time.
For those parents that are accessing google meets through Chrome there is an extension you can now download so that you can actually see everyone on the screen at once in a grid view which makes it a lot easier to see everyone faces who are in the meeting. It is certainly not a requirement but for those of you that are interested in getting this, the link is...

Google will actually be releasing an update next weekend to allow 16 people to be viewed at once, so you may chose to wait for this upgrade.
English
Our reading strategy for this week is 'Infer and support with evidence'.
Have you ever read a book and assumed what the author was saying or feeling without having it actually written down? You make these assumptions using your background knowledge, clues from the story, and pictures. Authors don’t always tell the reader everything they want them to know about the story. In order to better comprehend, children must learn to be detectives and look for clues in the text to understand the meaning of the story. Learning to infer and support with evidence is a strategy used by good readers to better understand what the author is saying.
Helping Your Child With This Reading Strategy at Home
1. Read to your child and model your thinking as you read. Modeling is one of the most effective teaching strategies.
2. Have your child “read” a wordless picture book. Using the pictures to tell stories helps with the inferring process.
3. When reading with your child, ask some of the following questions:
* Can you explain why the character acted this way? *How do you think the author might feel about (the character)? * Think about the setting… what details can you add? *What clues can you find in the pictures?
Remind your child that a book detective goes slowly, looks for clues, and uses those clues to support his/her thinking.
Thank you for your continued support at home!
Writing
If you want to be a good writer you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot. (Stephen King)
This week in writing students will write a weekly recount with a continued focus on the orientation. This answers the who, what, when and where of the experience. There will be the added focus of the correct use of capital letters.
Students will look closer at the features of an explanatory text and have more practise in writing them. There will be a link between Art and writing this week where students will write an explanation of how to make a finger puppet (so don't forget to make a finger puppet on Tuesday if possible).
Students will make a simple flowchart to show a process. This will involve moving pictures and matching text to show the chocolate making process.
'Clever Cat' will be used to help students write their letters in the correct place on dotted thirds.
Word Study
This week, students will continue to practice their codes from last week and be introduced to 6 new codes throughout the week. We will build up to having a working pack of 30 codes by Friday. Students will also explore how to use reading and spelling tools to help them decode and write words through a series of mini-lesson videos. These tools demonstrate the thinking out loud process required to read and write. Once we train our brains to think through these steps, our brain will do the thinking automatically. Students will practice the same reading tools lesson this Monday and Wednesday and the same spelling tools lesson on Tuesday and Thursday.
Wellbeing
Each day students practise mindfulness to create calmer classrooms. This is something that you can continue at home by using The Smiling Mind App which can be downloaded for free via the App store.
Here are some NEW mindfulness colouring pages for those children who love this activity. Remember to colour each smaller section mindfully.
Mathematics
It has been great to see the enthusiasm and commitment students have demonstrated towards the Maths tasks. This week in Mathematics students will be introduced to addition. Our learning intentions include:
* Creating stories to help solve addition problems
* Adding numbers to 10
* Using a variety of strategies to solve addition problems such as counting on and number lines.
Students will have the opportunity to practise their addition skills through two card games called 'Tens Go Fish' and 'High Card - Addition'.
They will log in to Mathletics (www.mathletics.com) and complete the addition tasks assigned by their teacher on Friday. If you child does not have a Mathletics username and password or you have misplaced it, please contact your child's teacher early in the week.
Inquiry
We were so impressed with students responses to their inquiry tasks last week. Seeing them find so many things around the house, made from natural resources was such an authentic experience for them all. This week students will continue developing their understanding of what 'natural and processed' means by writing an initial definition that we will then revisit later in the inquiry. They will also develop an understanding of the process milk goes through and begin to develop an understanding of how to show a process using flow charts.

Please find FAQ and answers here. We will continue to update this document as questions from parents come in. We ask that you read these before you email teacher

*We recommend 20 minutes independent reading for Grade 1 daily (see Gail Boushey's videos for support).
* Each day your child will be given a daily task schedule on SeeSaw that will be uploaded for parents the night prior. Please note that the highlighted sections are the ones students need to respond to and teachers will provide feedback on this activity.
