School Athletics Carnival

On Monday, 13th May BAPS held our annual Athletics Carnival. It was a great day held in bright sunshine, better than the original day, as it was cancelled due to rain.

The following school records were broken on the day.

Chloe P:    11rys 100m, 11yrs 200m

Ayden P:   Junior Discus

Willem P:   12yrs 100m

Izaak G:     Junior Discus

Blake R:     11yrs High Jump

Recognition awards for these students will be handed out at our athletics assembly on Wednesday 19th June.

Our Athletics Champions are still yet to be determined as some of our shot put events are yet to be finished. These events are being held in the next few weeks at school during lunch breaks. Once the shot put has concluded our age champions will be advised.

Currently the house points are very close. With only shot put remaining, 1 team is on 387, another on 392, and 2 teams are tied on 402. This is the tightest contest that I have known since my teaching began some 23 years ago. Once the shot put is concluded, our champion house will be announced.

An athletics/cross country 3-6 assembly will be planned towards the end of term where all award winners will be presented their ribbons. This will also include 8yr old events for Year 2 students who participated. This assembly will be conducted on Wednesday 19th June, Week 8 from 2.05pm in the hall.

TLPSSA Zone Athletics Carnival.

The Tuggerah Lakes Primary School Sports Association (TLPSSA) Zone Athletics Carnival will be conducted on Friday 23rd August (Week 5, Term 3). Students will be advised in Term 3, closer to the date, if they have been successful. A note will be sent out indicating the events each child has qualified for.

I often get asked how our athletes are selected for these events. The top 3 students from the 100m age races are automatic selections. These are 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 yr age groups. In all other events 8yrs, 9yrs and 10yrs are combined into an age group called Juniors, 11yrs are separate and 12/13yrs are combined into another group. The top 2 students from all other events gain selection. This falls in line with the NSWPSSA rules which filter down to Regional (Sydney North) and Zone (Tuggerah Lakes) levels. Please also be aware that BAPS conducted their carnival in separate age groups. To decide who is selected we compare heights, distances or times between age groups with the top two place getters being selected. Our relays are conducted in Junior (8, 9, 10yr) and Senior (11, 12, 13yr) age groups. The fastest 4 runners in these age groups taken from 100m events are selected, no matter what house group they are in.

Any concerns please see Mr Stephen.

National Athletics Championships

In 2019 the School Sport Australia (SSA) Track and Field Championships will be held in the Northern Territory.

Due to extreme heat conditions in Darwin during November/December when the National Track and Field Championships are traditionally held, this year’s SSA event will be held from the 18-23 September 2019.

In order to select a NSW representative track & field team for this event, the NSWPSSA will be holding a special selection trial. Participation at these trials will be via a formal application to NSWPSSA and athletes MUST compete at this event to achieve selection in the 2019 NSW representative team.

If you believe your child is an elite athlete who would like to compete at these NSW selections trials, or you have further questions in relation to this event, please make enquires with Mr Stephen at school on 43331022.
