News from Year 6

School Anzac Service

On Wednesday May 10th, the year 6 students represented St Joseph's School at the Upper Yarra RSL Anzac Commemoration Service.  Many other schools were there from the Upper Yarra Valley as well as returned soldiers, members of the RSL, Legacy, State and Local Government, and community members.  It was a memorable occasion where the students from each school took part in the service, presenting the history of Australians in war, and significant prayers. They were greeted by the Caterfalque party made up of Amy and Naval officials.  At the end of the service, the students had the opportunity to speak with returned soldiers and were also able to look at items from the Vietnam War such as backpacks, ammunition, and examples of hand grenades, and land mines. Chatting with the men about the items on display and listening to some of their stories was very interesting.

Inquiry

This term in inquiry we have been learning to collect data from weather implements. First, we investigated the implements used to determine weather such as barometers, weather stations, rain gauges and wind vanes.  We then collected materials to make our own versions of this to place around the school to collect data with.  We will be checking daily how much precipitation we will be able to collect using our rain gauge.  We have had lots of fun creating these in the classroom.

Upper Yarra Transition

Today (Friday 12th May) the year 6 students travelled to Upper Yarra Secondary College to take part in a transition day.  First the students gathered on the outdoor basketball court and then proceeded to the Food Technology Centre to make chocloate coconut balls.  The students had fun creating and mixing all of the ingredients together to create the snack.  After the cooking experience, they cleaned dishes, washed down benches and went off to have lunch.  after lunch, the year 6s took part in a mapping art activity.

It was a great day out.
