News from One/Two

Wow, already Week 4 of Term 2! We have had so much happening, school photos (like the fun one above), Mother's Day morning, Masses, and our performing assembly. If you didn't get to attend here are a few pictures of the wonderful event. The children enjoyed re-enacting Mary and the women at Jesus' tomb as part of the Easter story. The 1/2 children also did a wonderful job presenting their Community topic from last term and singing the song Reach for the Stars.

Over the last few weeks, the 1/2 class has been looking at place value in mathematics. The children have really enjoyed this concept and have now started to use their knowledge when using addition and subtraction sums.

During Literacy, this coming week's spelling we will be focusing on /j/. Some students will be looking at the letter <g> making a /j/ sound when followed by an <e>, <i>, or <y>. Please if you notice this spelling rule in words be sure to help your child. For example in words like gym and giraffe.

Thank you to all the parents who help their children each night to practice their spelling words and readers (you are amazing). Don't also forget the children can log some of their readers in the Premiers Reading Challenge.

Some parents in the 1/2 group have been asking about how to help their children with reading. In the decodable books sent out each week, there are some great pre-reading and post-reading ideas. Be sure to follow this advice when reading with your child as it is really informative. In addition, here is a document called Basic Reading to help you guide your child during home reading.

Just a reminder that the Maroondah Dam excursion will be next week on Tuesday the 16th of May. We are all very excited to be participating in this event again this year. It is a fun-filled day. Please make sure the Operoo forms for this event have been signed, thank you.

Also, some dates not to forget are next Monday the 15th of May, the school assembly at 2:15 pm, and on the afternoon of May 26th, a 1/2 parent veggie patch working bee. Please if any of you could spare some gardening time we could really use a helping hand.

On Tuesday, we have our photo trail excursion at Maroondah Dam. Please check out Operoo and fill out the permission form as soon as possible. Students will need to be at school for a 9 am departure. They will wear full sports uniforms and may wish to bring a coat as it gets cold there. Students only need to bring a small bag with their lunchbox and a water bottle. If you have completed the Parent Helpers Course, have a current WWCC, signed the Parent Code of Conduct, and wish to come along and help, please email Bec B at rheenan@sjyarrajunction.catholic.edu.au

To all our wonderful mothers for this Sunday, have an amazing day, and may you be spoilt. We hope you enjoyed the little present that the children made in our 1/2 room. Thank you so much for helping them all grow!

Please reach out if there is anything we can help with or if you have any questions/concerns.

Kindly,

Jacqui and Terry
