eSmart Week

Be your best self online

Last week was National eSmart Week which focuses on promoting smart, safe and responsible use of digital technology. This year’s theme, ‘Be your best self online’, invites young people to explore what it means to be a positive digital citizen.

During library sessions last week, Foundation - Year 6 students explored picture books designed to help manage their online safety and ways to deal with cyberbullying issues.

Foundation students read Swoosh, Glide and Rule Number 5 by Barbara Uecker and Peter Viska. This story reinforces the four key online safety messages for young children: Be safe, Be kind, Ask for help and Make good choices. They enjoyed singing along to the Family Rules song and making Swoosh and Glide masks. To read or listen to this story click here

Year 1/2 students listened to Once Upon A Time Online by David Bedford. In this story, our favourite fairytale characters receive a laptop and learn a few lessons in online safety. Students enjoyed creating posters to help highlight these key messages.

Year 3/4 and 5/6 students read and discussed Chicken Clicking by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross. This story is a timely and cautionary tale about the perils of misusing the internet. All classes had great discussions about the different ways young people communicate online and explored the dangers of talking to strangers.
